Boxing divisional rankings: 'Bam' Rodriguez is the new king at junior bantamweight

Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez defeated Juan Francisco Estrada by seventh-round KO to become the WBC junior bantamweight title Saturday night at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

This is Rodriguez's second reign in the division. He won the same belt against Carlos Cuadras in February 2022, and after two successful defenses, he moved down to flyweight in April 2023, where he captured the 112-pound WBO belt against Christian Gonzalez. Eight months later, he defeated Sunny Edwards by ninth-round TKO to add the IBF title. Rodriguez (20-0, 13 KOs), of San Antonio, Texas, relinquished both belts to move up a division to fight future Hall of Famer Estrada.

"I'm the legend slayer," Rodriguez said after the fight. "The better the opponent, the better I perform. I've always felt that way. It was just a matter of time until the world saw it."

Estrada (44-4, 28 KOs), of Sonora, Mexico, has a rematch clause he said he plans to exercise. The 34-year-old lost for the first time in more than six years. Rodriguez, 24, welcomes the rematch but wants to unify the belts at 115 pounds.

"I've been saying that I'm here at 115 pounds for two or three fights," Rodriguez said. "I know that there is a rematch clause with Estrada, so if he wants to go through with that, then we can run it back. If not, I want the winner of Kazuto Ioka and Fernando Martinez [who fight to unify the WBA and IBF titles on July 7 in Tokyo]."

With the victory, Rodriguez, 24, takes over the No. 1 spot at junior bantamweight, while Estrada falls to No. 3.

In the co-main event, former flyweight champion Sunny Edwards defeated Adrian Curiel by unanimous technical decision after the fight was stopped before the start of Round 10 for a cut on Edwards' forehead due to an unintentional headbutt. Edwards (21-1, 4 KOs), of London, won by scorecards of 90-82, 88-84 and 87-85.

With Rodriguez moving to junior bantamweight, Edwards, 28, moves from No. 2 to No. 1 in the flyweight division.

Also on Saturday, Teofimo Lopez had a lackluster performance against Steve Claggett in Miami. While he won a unanimous decision to retain his WBO junior welterweight title, Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs), of Brooklyn, New York, failed to make an impact against an opponent who was a big underdog coming into the fight, and one that had never fought for a world title in his 16-year career.

"I knew exactly what kind of fighter he was," Lopez said of Claggett after the fight. "I knew he would come forward and test my conditioning. And that's what we had. We went 12 rounds.

"The will has to be stronger than the skill. And that's what we showed tonight. If I was tired, I know he was more tired because I worked very hard for this. We knew we had to break him down. The body shots were hurting him."

Lopez, 26, retains his No. 1 spot in the division with the victory.

ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will change often, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.

Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.

Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Nick Parkinson, Damian Delgado Averhoff and Andres Ferrari. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
