HOUSTON -- Astros hitting coach Sean Berry has had a kidney with a cancerous tumor on it removed.
Dr. Richard Goldfarb performed the surgery Friday at The Methodist Hospital, taking out the right kidney. Doctors say they got the entire growth and there will be no need for follow-up cancer treatments.
Houston manager Cecil Cooper said Berry was doing well and that he'll be "probably be back out here in a couple of weeks."
The 43-year-old Berry first began experiencing discomfort in his kidney area last Saturday while the Astros were in Atlanta. Tests then revealed the need for the surgery.
Berry is in his fourth season as the Astros hitting coach. He played 11 seasons in the Major Leagues, including three seasons with the Astros (1996-98).
