Cleveland State fires Felton after two seasons

Men's College Basketball, Cleveland State Vikings

Coach Dennis Felton and his entire staff have been fired by Cleveland State after two seasons, athletic director Scott Garrett said Friday.

Garrett reiterated the school takes its mission for student-athletes to have a "transformational experience" very seriously.

"Our coaches operate with the expectation that they should build a culture supportive of our student-athletes in the classroom, accountable for their conduct as representatives of the University, and for their performance on the court," Garrett said in a release. "We will seek a new leader for our program who can deliver on this commitment."

The 56-year-old Felton, who replaced Gary Waters in 2017, went 22-44 in his two seasons. He previously coached at Western Kentucky and Georgia.

Following Friday's news, Cleveland State guard Rasheem Dunn told ESPN's Jeff Borzello that he intends to transfer.

Dunn sat out last season after transferring from St. Francis, where he averaged 15.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore. He said he hopes to receive a waiver to play immediately.

Cleveland State's men's basketball program has struggled in recent years, going 40-89 over the past four seasons and last making the NCAA tournament in 2009. The Vikings went 5-13 in the Horizon League last season.

The school said former Vikings player and broadcast analyst Pat Vuyancih will serve as a special assistant for the program until a coach is hired.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
