News: 1 day agoSong is slated to make his Cactus League debut in the coming days after recovering from an oblique injury he suffered while taking batting practice in January, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Spin: Song took his first live batting practice Thursday and said through an interpreter that he's "just waiting for a green light to play in a game." After primarily playing third base in Korea, Song is slated to fill a utility role with the Padres, seeing action at shortstop, second base and left field in addition to the hot corner.

ESPN Fantasy Projection: Back-to-back big years in Korea, at the ages of 27 and 28, put Song firmly on the MLB radar, and the Padres saw his defensive utility as a boon to their offense. He managed a 25/25 season overseas in 2025, and he has a good chance at breaking camp as the Padres’ second baseman, if not a rotating starter all over their infield. Monitor Song’s progress in adapting to MLB pitching during spring training, as he’d be a late-round sleeper if he looks ready to play every day.
