NC State brings in graduate transfer kicker Carson Wise

College Football, NC State Wolfpack, Carson-Newman Eagles

NC State coach Dave Doeren may have found his kicker. Carson Wise, a graduate transfer kicker out of Division II Carson-Newman, will join the Wolfpack for the upcoming season.

Wise will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Kicking issues plagued NC State throughout last season. The Wolfpack missed three field goals in an overtime loss to Clemson, including a 33-yard field goal that would have won the game as time expired in regulation.

In a 33-30 loss to East Carolina, NC State missed field goals of 44 yards and 42 yards. For the season, NC State was 9-for-17 on field goals and missed three extra points.

In December, Doeren told ESPN that speculation about his job security after a 7-6 season was unwarranted because "if I had a kicker, I'd probably have 10 wins right now."

Last week, Doeren said the kicking issues were still unresolved with the April 1 spring game nearing.

At Carson-Newman, Wise converted 21 of 31 field-goal attempts and was 97-for-101 on PATs. Wise began his college career at Virginia Tech but transferred to Carson-Newman for playing time.

"I'm excited to have Carson join the family," Doeren said Thursday. "He is a talented player who should be a great addition to our special teams as we look for him to handle our field goal and kickoff duties this fall."

NC State will also bring in two walk-on kickers this summer.
