Britain's Daley wins Grand Prix Gold

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- British teenager Thomas Daley won gold in the men's platform final with 554.90 points at the USA Diving Grand Prix on Saturday.

The 14-year-old scored perfect 10s from the seven judges on his fifth dive -- a backward 3½ tuck with a 3.3 degree of difficulty.

In his last three dives, Daley had all 10s except for five 9.5s -- three 9.5s on his fourth dive and two on his sixth dive.

"It was my personal best score by 14 points, so I'm really happy," Daley said. "It was good that all my dives were near perfect."

Sascha Klein of Germany took silver with 552.15 points and Zhou Luxin of China, who won silver in the platform at the Beijing Olympics, was third with 549.70 points.

American Troy Dumais, a three-time Olympian, picked up his second gold of the meet at the Fort Lauderdale Diving Complex with 512.00 points in the 3-meter springboard.

He scored more than 80 points on his last five dives, earning a 96.25 and 94.50 on his final two dives, respectively.

"I'm happy because I had five solid dives," said Dumais, who also won the synchronized 3-meter springboard event with Kristian Ipsen on Friday. "The last two dives today, I love them and that's why I leave them for last."

The United States won four medals on the final day of competition -- two golds, one silver and one bronze -- to end the three-day meet with eight medals overall.

Reuben Ross of Canada won silver in the men's 3-meter springboard with a 483.75 and American Christopher Colwill took bronze with a 473.45.

Allison Brennan earned the other gold for the U.S., winning the women's 3-meter springboard with 358.55 points.

Wu Minxia of China, the bronze medalist in the 3-meter springboard and gold medalist in synchronized 3-meter springboard at Beijing, finished a surprising fourth with 329.50 points.

"All the divers are talented in the finals that I go against, so it's just an honor to be up in a class with them," Brennan said.

Anastasia Pozdniakova of Russia came in second with 340.55 points and Jennifer Abel of Canada was third with 331.95.

Canadian Roseline Filion won her second gold of the meet, winning the women's platform with 338.40 points. American Brittany Viola, who dives for the University of Miami, took silver with 329.15 points.

"I had the strength to make all my dives today, so I just need to rip them a little bit better," Viola said.

Her father, former major league pitcher Frank Viola, admires his daughter's courage.

"I wouldn't go up there, I'm afraid of heights," he said.

Meaghan Benfeito, who won the Synchro Platform gold with Filion earlier in the competition, took home bronze with a 328.35.
