2008 Outlook: According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, deer harvest was down 11 percent from 2006 to 2007
It's becoming a disturbing trend in the state, which has been known for its exceptional deer hunting.
The 323,070 deer harvested in 2007 is the smallest harvest since 1986. They harvested 517, 529 only six years ago in 2002 but have been on the decline since.
The Game Commission started trying to get people involved in managing their deer with the Management Indicator Map, which focuses on the quality of the habitat and deer health.
Hunters wanting to get a leg up on the competition might look to the Wildlife Management Units in the south-central part of the state, which boasts the best forest regeneration.
Deer health appeared to be pretty consistent across the state, with above average health in the northwest and southeast corners. The 2008 harvest should be consistent with last year, which is down for Pennsylvania, but good compared with the rest of the country.
