Match Commentary

81'+123-13 End of second half
80'"Heck of a Test match," Kieran Read says. "We took our opportunities," he says of the five-minute spell in which New Zealand scored 17 points in the first half to claim a match-defining 17-3 advantage.
80'"We lost our way, today," Springboks captain Siya Kolisi says. "We couldn't capitalise on our opportunities.
80'New Zealand off to a winning start, in a somewhat subdued game, but questions still for them to answer. Still, they have points in the bag, and they remain the only team in Rugby World Cup history never to have lost a pool game. More questions than answers for the Springboks, however. South Africa were confident they could / would win this but they were well beaten really -- and by an opponent noweher near their best.
79'All Blacks finally lose the ball, outside the Springboks' 22, but this game is done.
76'New Zealand put the ball through simply phases to manage possession, and the game, with a smart break from George Bridge getting them inside the Boks' 22.
76'Chesline Kolbe has made 9 runs for 118 metres today, but South Africa have simply not had a final man close enough to the winger at the crucial moments.
76'Player substituted - Scott Barrett , New Zealand
76'Substitute on - Shannon Frizell , New Zealand
76'Substitute on - Frans Malherbe , South Africa
76'Player substituted - Trevor Nyakane , South Africa
74'New Zealand cough up the ball under pressure after their scrum goes backwards, and Damian de Allende leads the charge. Cheslin Kolbe again dangerous in broken field a couple of phases later, but New Zealand win the ball and clear their lines. Willie le Roux runs the ball back to have the Boks on the front foot, but the ball to Herschel Jantjies is forward.
72'Beauden Barrett succeeds with his first goal kick of the match, the penalty awarded for the South Africans being offside in defence, and the All Blacks now lead by 10 points - crucially beyond one score.
72'23-13 Penalty goal - Beauden Barrett , New Zealand
72'Substitute on - Herschel Jantjies , South Africa
72'Player substituted - Faf de Klerk , South Africa
70'Physical game in the trenches, with ferocious battles for the ball on the ground. South Africa firmly on attack after a somewhat lackadaisical Sonny Bill Williams' kick was charged down, but the opportunity comes to nothing.
70'Substitute on - RG Snyman , South Africa
70'Player substituted - Eben Etzebeth , South Africa
68'New Zealand win a penalty with Pieter-Steph du Toit holding the ball after falling the wrong way having been tackled. Back on halfway after the Boks had gotten to the All Blacks' 22.
68'Player substituted - Steven Kitshoff , South Africa
68'Substitute on - Tendai Mtawarira , South Africa
67'Substitute on - Ben Smith , New Zealand
67'Player substituted - Richie Mo'unga , New Zealand
67'20-13 Penalty goal - Richie Mo'unga , New Zealand
66'Key penalty success from Richie Mo'unga, extending the lead to a full converted try. Fly-half's last contribution, as he's replaced by Ben Smith. Beauden Barrett up to flyhalf, with Smith going to fullback.-
63'Strong New Zealand scrum to win South African ball, but the opportunity goes begging with the final pass from George Bridge going behind Beauden Barrett with the tryline begging. Ball comes back to New Zealand for a penalty offence earlier in the move, however.
62'Substitute on - Bongi Mbonambi , South Africa
62'Player substituted - Malcolm Marx , South Africa
62'Player substituted - Aaron Smith , New Zealand
62'Substitute on - TJ Perenara , New Zealand
60'New Zealand building phases, but Springboks have regained their shape in the rush defensive alignment -- with the All Blacks now having to look back inside with the outside opportunities sealed off.
59'17-13 Drop goal - Handre Pollard , South Africa
58'Handre Pollard roosts his second drop goal against the All Blacks, under a scrum advantage, the fly-half turning towards his own territory the moment his kick was launched so confident was he of the trajectory.
57'New Zealand themsleves might want to up the energy levels. After seemingly managing the game for so long they now risk letting the Boks back into it through their own inertia.
57'Player substituted - Lukhanyo Am , South Africa
57'Substitute on - Jesse Kriel , South Africa
56'Brilliant work from Franco Mostert to steal a lineout at the tail of the set piece. Penalty to South Africa, as the lock was taken out in the air, and Handre Pollard put the Boks just outside the All Blacks' 22.
55'Player substituted - Frans Malherbe , South Africa
55'Substitute on - Trevor Nyakane , South Africa
51'Tremendous breakaway from South Africa, with Faf de Klerk leading the charge after great work from Duane Vermeulen. The scrumhalf feeds Willie le Roux, but the fullback then throws a horrible pass to Cheslin Kolbe on the wing. Kolbe does well to pick the ball up but momentum lost.
51'Player substituted - Ryan Crotty , New Zealand
51'Substitute on - Sonny Bill Williams , New Zealand
51'Player substituted - Nepo Laulala , New Zealand
51'Substitute on - Angus Ta'avao , New Zealand
51'Substitute on - Francois Louw , South Africa
51'Player substituted - Joe Moody , New Zealand
51'Substitute on - Ofa Tu'ungafasi , New Zealand
51'Player substituted - Siya Kolisi , South Africa
50'Siya Kolisi substituted, with Francois Louw injected into the action; Flo provides a much greater threat over the ball at the breakdown, and interesting to see if the Boks are able to secure faster ball.
49'17-10 Conversion - Handre Pollard , South Africa
48'17-8 Try - Pieter-Steph du Toit , South Africa
47'Pieter-Steph du Toit crashes over after picking up a New Zealand ball at the breakdown, and he runs unopposed under the posts.
45'Brilliant from Cheslin Kolbe, who collects a high ball on the right wing inside his own half then flies down the flank only to be hauled down by Richie Mo'unga as he was set to dive for the try line. South Africa need inspiration from somewhere, and he could be it.
42'South Africa concede a free kick at a midfield scrum, and Kieran Read elects to set another scrum. Another illustration as to how the Springboks' game has gone south. Then win a penalty and we're now deep in Springboks territory.
41'Player substituted - Dane Coles , New Zealand
41'Substitute on - Codie Taylor , New Zealand
41'Player substituted - Sam Cane , New Zealand
41'Substitute on - Patrick Tuipulotu , New Zealand
41'+117-3 End of first half
40'We're back under, with South Africa needing to lift their energy levels.
40'
40'Springboks missed 23 tackles in the first half. You can't hope to win a Test with such a defensive effort. Incredible to consider the Boks were dominant for the first 20 minutes, and to consider their defence was the dominant aspect of the fixture through that period.
40'First half game to a soft finish, with the All Blacks content to defend and what for what has seemed to be the inevitable Springboks error. This time Pieter-Steph du Toit knocks on a poor pass. Springboks have lots to do.
40'17-3 Start of second half
36'
34'South Africa lloking to be in need of halftime, as their play has become flat, directionless and ponderous.
32'Hugely professional game management from the All Blacks, who have just taken the pace out of the game for a moment to reset and recalibrate. South Africa meanwhile persisting with the aerial bombs to both New Zealand wingers, but that tactic seems not to be as effective now the All Blacks are on the front foot.
29'Springboks not unnaturally seem fazed and scrambled given how the game has changed, their play lacking the confidence and assurance of the opening 20 minutes.
28'17-3 Conversion - Richie Mo'unga , New Zealand
27'Handre Pollard spills a high ball, and New Zealand are then in broken field play. Dane Coles puts a superb ball to Anton Lienert-Brown, who then skips through the defence before feeding Scott Barrett to run clear. Huge change in momentum, and South Africa now surely have to be the next team to score.
27'15-3 Try - Scott Barrett , New Zealand
26'Beauden Barrett receiving more of the ball, in space, and at first receiver, and the All Blacks suddenly are devastating the rush defence.
25'10-3 Conversion - Richie Mo'unga , New Zealand
24'8-3 Try - George Bridge , New Zealand
23'Brilliant breakout from New Zealand, and George Bridge crosses for the first try. Fantastic chip pass from Richie Mo'unga to Sevu Reece on the right wing, who then skips away from Makazole Mapimpi. Beauden Barrett and Ardie Savea make further metres before the left wing crosses unopposed. South Africa dominant and bang-bang the All Blacks are ahead.
23'3-3 Penalty goal - Richie Mo'unga , New Zealand
22'Richie Mo'unga knocks over the simple penalty, and New Zealand are level on the scoreboard despite not being in the game to this point.
20'New Zealand break away after a Boks pass goes loose in midfield, Richie Mo'unga runs clear but is hauled down by Makazole Mapimpi. South Africa penalised for not releasing the Mo'unga, and Mapimpi hugely fortunate not to have been yellow-carded.
18'Handre Pollard misses an absolute sitter, Hits the right post, and a huge let off for the All Blacks, who have not yet been in the game.
17'South Africa have a penalty after Faf de Klerk is obstructed. Strong work from Eben Etzebeth got the Boks firmly over the gain line.
15'Joe Moody's left elbow hits the turf for the third time in four scrummages, and the Boks are clearly on top at the set-piece.
14'South Africa seem to be on top at scrum time, with NZL loosehead Joe Moody looking to be under particular pressure.
11'New Zealand build nine phases but go nowhere against the rush defence, and Richie Mo'unga is forced to kick. The Boks' defence is the dominant aspect of the game at the minute, and Mo'unga is struggling a little against it.
10'New Zealand scrum-half Aaron Smith's kick charged down from a ruck, under pressure from Duane Vermeulen, but the Boks concede a penalty to release the pressure.
8'George Bridge knocks on under pressure, and the Boks recollect the ball and put it through air to the left, where Makazole Mapimpi goes into contact before losing the ball.
5'South Africa go wide to the right before Lukhanyo Am puts in a chip kick to space behind left wing George Bridge. Not the first time the have kicked to that area.
2'South Africa concede a penalty to gift the All Blacks territory inside the Boks' 22. NZL win the lineout but then hoist an up and under, which Cheslin Kolbe defuses. First sign of NZL tactics to challenge the Boks' rush defence.
2'Handre Pollard drills the ball between the sticks. 52m kick given the angle.
2'0-3 Penalty goal - Handre Pollard , South Africa
1'Early penalty for the Springboks, with George Bridge not releasing the ball having collected a box kick from Faf de Klerk.
1'We're underway in Yokohama, with Beauden Barrett kicking off.
1'The All Blacks are performing the Kapa O Pango haka.
1'As the teams walk out for the anthems, this piece is worth bookmarking to read later. What leading the haka means to TJ Perenara.
1'The All Blacks have won the toss, and they will kick off.
