Match Commentary

81'16-16 End of second half
81'16-16 Conversion - Handre Pollard , South Africa
80'
80'What a game that was, and fair play to South Africa for staying in it right to the end when they didn't look like scoring a try at all in the second half. Thanks for your company tonight and stay with us on the Wallabies vs. Springboks page where we will have live commentary shortly!
80'
80'Pollard converts and we have a draw. Incredible! What a kick that was from the Springboks No. 10!
80'16-14 Try - Herschel Jantjies , South Africa
79'It's a try! Pollard will have a chance to level the scores! Kolbe was set down the touchline via a fine pass, the winger then kicking over the top where Jantjies was following through, the halfback just getting a touch that avoided Smith and then reclaimed the loose ball to get the try!
79'Try time South Africa! We're going upstairs to the TMO after Herschel Jantjies follows through a kick from Cheslin Kolbe and wins the ball above Aaron Snmith. This could be some late drama!
78'Penalty South Africa. The Boks win a penalty at the scrum but fail to find touch; they do however still end up with a lineout throw on the All Blacks' 10 after Barrett clears into touch.
77'Scrum South Africa. The Boks will at last get their hands on the ball after the All Blacks knock-on following a steady phase build-up. The visitors have a long way to go, though, with the scrum to be set just outside their own 22.
77'Player substituted - Shannon Frizell , New Zealand
77'Substitute on - Dalton Papali'i , New Zealand
75'16-9 Penalty goal - Richie Mo'unga , New Zealand
74'It's over, and the All Blacks' lead is seven with six minutes to play. The Boks are going to have to do something special to earn a draw from here, let alone the win, and immediately make it harder on themselves by conceding a penalty straight from the restart.
73'Penalty New Zealand. Things are blowing up at the Cake Tin after the hosts win a penalty for the Boks going off their feet. The visitors seemed to feel aggrieved a knock-on had been missed and tempers boiled over from there. The All Blacks will have the chance to extend their lead here, though, as Mo'unga lines up another penalty.
70'Five-metre scrum New Zealand. The All Blacks will attack from right on the Boks' line after Beauden Barrett drops a perfectly-weighted kick in behind and Willie le Roux is forced to carry the ball back over his own line. The problem started with a lost lineout for the Boks.
70'Substitute on - Bongi Mbonambi , South Africa
70'Player substituted - Malcolm Marx , South Africa
68'Penalty South Africa! Just when it looked like the All Blacks were about to go in, the visitors win a penalty for holding on just 10 metres out from their own line. The hosts are finally stringing some passes together and opening up space both out wide and through the middle of the paddock. Dane Coles is looking dangerous in looming in the wide channels, which he likes to do.
68'Player substituted - Kwagga Smith , South Africa
68'Substitute on - Francois Louw , South Africa
67'13-9 Penalty goal - Richie Mo'unga , New Zealand
66'A change of kicker sees Richie Mo'unga take the shot, and the All Blacks kicker promptly bangs over the penalty from right in front. The lead is now back out to four points.
65'Penalty New Zealand. A promising string of phases from the hosts eventually brings a reward from referee Berry as the Boks are pinged for offisde. There is just a bit of space starting to open up out wide for the All Blacks' wingers, though the Boks are scrambling well in defence, too.
62'Kieran Read isn't having a great night, the All Blacks skipper shelling another pass which gives South Africa the chance to counter. They do, too, only for Willie le Roux's kick to drift out on the full just when it looked like he might be about to run into a bit of space.
61'Pollard hits his third penalty of the night and the lead is just one point with 19 minutes to go. We're in for a huge finish here in Wellington!
61'Substitute on - George Bridge , New Zealand
61'Player substituted - Rieko Ioane , New Zealand
61'Player substituted - Codie Taylor , New Zealand
61'Substitute on - Dane Coles , New Zealand
61'10-9 Penalty goal - Handre Pollard , South Africa
61'Player substituted - Brodie Retallick , New Zealand
61'Substitute on - Vaea Fifita , New Zealand
60'Retallick leaves the field in what could be a huge blow to the All Blacks' World Cup plans, given how much pain the champion lock was in.
60'Penalty South Africa. This time it's the Boks who win a scrum penalty after a strong shunt from the visitors pack. Meanwhile, Brodie Retallick is down with what looks to be a shoulder injury. Pollard will however line up a shot to reduce the gap to one point once play resumes.
59'Substitute on - Aaron Smith , New Zealand
59'Player substituted - TJ Perenara , New Zealand
59'Player substituted - Sonny Bill Williams , New Zealand
59'Substitute on - Anton Lienert-Brown , New Zealand
59'Substitute on - Tendai Mtawarira , South Africa
59'Player substituted - Steven Kitshoff , South Africa
58'Knock-on New Zealand. All Blacks skipper Kieran Read spills one cold which gives the Boks a half chance to counter, but the visitors then shell the pill themselves. Ref Nic Berry comes back for the original knock-on, a scrum from which the Boks will look to attack; something they have done little of so far this half.
56'Player substituted - Frans Malherbe , South Africa
56'Substitute on - Trevor Nyakane , South Africa
56'Substitute on - Francois Steyn , South Africa
56'Player substituted - Damian de Allende , South Africa
55'Penalty New Zealand. Springboks skipper Duane Vermeulen couldn't resist a second crack at the breakdown, and concedes a penalty right on halfway. The All Blacks can't win their own lineout, though, before the Boks kick possession away once more.
53'Shank! Barrett sprays one well to the right of the posts in what was an ugly strike straight off the boot. The lead stays at four as we near the hour mark.
53'Penalty New Zealand. The All Blacks put on a huge eight-man shove to push South Africa off their own ball and win the decision from Nic Berry. Barrett will line up another shot at penalty just to the right of his successful last attempt.
52'Knock-on New Zealand. A promising run from Ben Smith is quickly snuffed out by the Boks' cover defence, before Matt Todd drops the ball in contact.
51'You just feel like the All Blacks are getting on top here as Pollard tries a cross-kick which goes straight into touch on the full, giving the All Blacks a lineout just inside South Africa's half.
51'Player substituted - Eben Etzebeth , South Africa
51'Substitute on - RG Snyman , South Africa
51'Substitute on - Jesse Kriel , South Africa
51'Player substituted - Lukhanyo Am , South Africa
49'The Springboks can't seem to punch any real holes in the All Blacks' defence at the moment, which forces Pollard to go to the air once more. Barrett can't field the bomb, but luckily Ioane is there to clean up. Richie Mo'unga then clears up field from the following phase.
49'10-6 Penalty goal - Beauden Barrett , New Zealand
48'It's over, taking the All Blacks' out to a 10-6 lead.
47'Penalty New Zealand. The All Blacks will line up a shot at penalty goal after the Boks are penalised for not releasing the tackled player. Barrett's shot is from about 18 metres out, just to the right of the posts.
46'TJ Perenara wins his second penalty of the night, again showing his resilience over the ball to win the decision for holding on. The Hurricanes No. 9 is making a real impression in a rare start ahead of Aaron Smith. New Zealand kick for touch and will attack from right on the Springboks' 22.
45'Substitute on - Angus Ta'avao , New Zealand
45'Player substituted - Owen Franks , New Zealand
45'Player substituted - Joe Moody , New Zealand
45'Substitute on - Ofa Tu'ungafasi , New Zealand
45'Player substituted - Faf de Klerk , South Africa
45'Substitute on - Herschel Jantjies , South Africa
44'Another lengthy exchange of play at last comes to an end after a forward pass from Sonny Bill Williams. The All Blacks strung 10 phases together but didn't really go anywhere, before the Boks then invited them to build some continuity again by going to the box kick. Eventually it was Beauden Barrett who found some space through the middle of the Boks' defence to see the hosts threaten for a moment, before Williams' flick pass went awry.
41'We're back underway in Wellington as New Zealand kick off to the Springboks clearing their line through Faf de Klerk, who doesn't find touch. The All Blacks then string some nice phases together, and Richie Mo'unga enjoys a half-break, before the hosts kick in behind to Willie le Roux.
41'7-6 End of first half
40'Here's a look at the only try of the first half, a smart pass from Sonny Bill Williams to put Beauden Barrett away.
40'
40'That's halftime in Wellington where it's the All Blacks leading the Springboks 7-6. It wasn't a vintage half of football from the hosts at all, while the visitors will lament their inability to capitalise on what was a strong start to the game. This one is still very much in the balance however, and the team who can hold onto the ball a little better after the break will likely come away with the win.
40'7-6 Start of second half
39'7-6 Conversion - Beauden Barrett , New Zealand
38'Sonny Bill Williams threw a smart pass out to Barrett, who was in space, the fullback taking off on a long run down the right touchline using his speed to burn the chasing Boks defence. Barrett then positioned Goodhue perfectly on his inside, drew the fullback, leaving the outside centre an untouched run to the line. Barrett nails the extras after Goodhue improved the position and, somehow, it's the All Blacks with the lead a couple of minutes out from half time.
37'5-6 Try - Jack Goodhue , New Zealand
36'Try time New Zealand! It came from nothing, but the All Blacks have the first try of the night through Jack Goodhue!
33'A brilliant piece of work from Pollard breaks up a dangerous All Blacks kick, just before it sits up for Ben Smith and Jack Goodhue. The Boks No. 10 then spins and takes off downfield before kicking himself, and winning the lineout for his team by pressuring a covering Beauden Barrett.
32'22 drop-out South Africa. After a Springboks turnover, Richie Mo'unga is fortunate to see his long kick not trickle dead-in-goal and result in a Springboks scrum back inside his own half.
31'Penalty South Africa. Steve Kitshoff wins a penalty for the visitors by taking a strong position over the ball, and winning the reward from ref Nic Berry. The All Blacks just can't seem to build any continuity in Wellington, though they will be happy to only be 6-0 down given how they have played so far.
29'Penalty New Zealand. A loose ball is swooped on by the All Blacks who then win a penalty for not rolling away at the next breakdown. Let's see if they can do anything from this lineout just outside the Springboks' 22.
28'Knock-on New Zealand. It's TJ Perenara who makes New Zealand's 11th turnover of the first half, the No. 9 trying to shrug off a tackle only to see the ball slip from his grasp in the process.
27'No good! Pollard can't split the uprights this time, the Boks fly-half's shot drifting wide of the right upright.
26'Penalty South Africa. The visitors string some nice phases together before Ioane is pinged for offside; the Boks going close to scoring through a little kick in behind from de Klerk. Pollard will line up a shot to take the lead out to 9-0.
24'Another New Zealand error turns possession over to Kwagga Smith who kicks downfield; the ball takes a wicked bounce and is cleaned up by Franco Mostert. The Springboks then shift it quickly and kick over to the opposite corner where the ball takes another wicked bounce and Damian de Allende forces a knock-on from Barrett.
21'
21'Knock-on New Zealand. Another turnover, this time from Joe Moody, sees the hosts give up possession after just a couple of phases. The hosts did threaten out wide briefly, before Kolbe cut down Rieko Ioane in a beautiful covering tackle.
20'A brilliant breakdown turnover from TJ Perenara wins a penalty for New Zealand just as the Springboks were starting to look quite dangerous. The All Blacks kick for touch and will attack from inside the visitors' half.
18'A wasted ball from the visitors there as Willie le Roux kicks in behind, but it's too big and is easily forced by Barrett. 22 dropout New Zealand.
17'A superb pass from Faf de Klerk puts Cheslin Kolbe on a run down the right touchline, the winger kicking ahead. It's cleaned up by Barrett, though, before the All Blacks fullback is bundled into touch. A nice net-gain for the Boks.
14'New Zealand just aren't clicking at the moment, the hosts knocking another ball on this time through Rieko Ioane. The Springboks' rush defence is proving effective so far, the up-and-in style putting significant pressure on the All Blacks' ball-carriers.
13'Barrett misses! Not a good start from the All Blacks fullback, whose kick slides to the right of the uprights.
12'Penalty New Zealand. It's back-to-back penalties for the hosts as Peter-Steph du Toit is pinged for not rolling away. Beauden Barrett will line up a shot goal for the hosts' first points of the night.
11'Penalty New Zealand. The All Blacks are having real trouble dealing with the box kicks of Faf de Klerk here early on, but they do get some relief through a penalty for not releasing the tackled player.
10'Pollard nails the penalty and it's a deserved 6-0 lead to the visitors. The All Blacks are right off their game here early in Wellington.
10'0-6 Penalty goal - Handre Pollard , South Africa
9'Penalty South Africa. The Boks have all the early running here as they win the lineout and drive the All Blacks back a couple of metres, they earn a penalty for offside two phases later and Pollard will line up a shot at penalty from next to the posts.
7'Penalty South Africa. Ben Smith is penalised for entering the ruck in the side, giving the Springboks the chance to kick into the corner and drive from the lineout.
5'Beauden Barrett forces the ball in-goal after a kick from Faf de Klerk, the ball just dribbles over the tryline after another All Blacks turnover earlier in the piece.
4'The All Blacks are again charged down before a Springboks lineout is stolen by the hosts. Sonny Bill Williams drops his first ball, though, which turns it right back over to the Boks who then cough it up themselves.
3'Pollard makes no mistake from the kicking tee to give the Boks a 3-0 lead, the No. 10's shot splitting the uprights perfectly in what was a beautiful strike from right in front.
3'0-3 Penalty goal - Handre Pollard , South Africa
2'We're underway as Handre Pollard kicks off down to the All Blacks who look to clear from their own line after a couple of phases. Beauden Barrett however is charged down; the All Blacks No. 10 gets another chance a couple of phases later but this time doesn't find touch, Pollard bringing it back into the All Blacks defence. The visitors then put a few phases together before getting a penalty. That was a almost a two-minute sequence to open play!
1'Another imposing haka, led by TJ Perenara, is laid down by the All Blacks. Now we await the opening whistle of Australian Nic Berry.
1'Anthems done, we're all set for kick-off in Wellington!
1'Both teams are out on the field for the anthems, which will be followed by the haka. It doesn't look to be a capacity crowd at the Cake Tin, with a few patches of yellow seats visible around the ground.
1'
1'The All Blacks also welcome back Sonny Bill Williams who needs to prove he can get through the rigours of Test rugby, the veteran centre partnering with Jack Goodhue in the midfield. The Springboks, meanwhile, are boosted up front by the return of Malcolm Marx, Franco Mostert, Kwagga Smith and Duane Vermuelen. This one should be an absolute cracker.
