SALT LAKE CITY -- Jayne Appel scored four of her 30 points
early in the second overtime and No. 5 Stanford avoided an upset,
holding off Utah 81-77 Sunday.

Appel also had 20 rebounds and six blocks despite drawing her
fourth foul with about 6 minutes left in regulation. The Cardinal
lost preseason All-American Candice Wiggins when she fouled out
with 2:51 left in the first overtime.

Melanie Murphy hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for Stanford to
force the first overtime, and Utah's Leilani Mitchell made a layup
with 0.2 seconds left send the game to another OT tied at 71.

But Stanford scored the first six points of the second overtime,
including four by Appel, and controlled the rest of the game.<

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Kristi Toliver scored 23 and Laura
Harper had 14 of her 16 points in the second half to help Maryland
beat LSU in the Preseason WNIT championship.

Jade Perry added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Terrapins
(5-0), who were missing All-American center Crystal Langhorne for
the third straight game. She has been sidelined with an ankle
injury.

Sylvia Fowles had 24 points and 13 rebounds for LSU (3-1).
Quianna Chaney added 23 points.

Trailing 40-38 early in the second half, Maryland went on a 16-1
run to take a 54-41 lead with 12:23 left in the game. Harper scored

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Candace Parker scored 21 points,
including Tennessee's first 11, and grabbed six rebounds and the
Lady Vols beat Texas.

The Tennessee win came on the same day that the Lady Vols
celebrated their 2006-07 national championship by hoisting a banner
honoring their seventh title to the rafters of Thompson-Boling
Arena.

The Lady Vols (3-0) played like national championship
contenders, dominating inside, grabbing steals and forcing
turnovers. They finished with 42 points in the paint, 40 points off
turnovers and 18 steals to rout Texas (2-1)<

WASHINGTON -- Matee Ajavon made four of five 3-pointers and
finished with 19 points, and Kia Vaughn had 13 points and 12
rebounds for Rutgers.

The Scarlet Knights (2-1) lost their opener to Stanford and were
unimpressive in a win over Creighton, but they blew out George
Washington (3-1) in the first half and ended the Colonials' 15-game
home winning streak. The loss was George Washington's worst at home
since an 88-57 loss to Tennessee in November 2001.<

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Rashanda McCants had career highs of 27
points and 14 rebounds to lead North Carolina over Syracuse in the
Women's NIT.

McCants, who led five players in double figures, scored 20
points by the half as North Carolina (5-0) ran up a 54-29 lead at
the break. She finished the game 7-for-15 from the field, including
four 3-pointers, and 9-for-13 at the line.

Erlana Larkins added 15 points and LaToya Pringle 11 for North
Carolina. Heather Claytor and Jessica Breland each had 10.<

DURHAM, N.C. -- Freshman Krystal Thomas had 20 points and 10
rebounds, and Duke beat North Carolina-Greensboro in Joanne P.
McCallie's coaching debut at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Chante Black added 17 points for the Blue Devils (3-0), who
outrebounded the outmanned Spartans 44-30, approached an arena
record by forcing 38 turnovers and scored 44 points off those
mistakes.

UNC Greensboro is 0-3 for the first time since 1996.<

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Alexis Gray-Lawson scored 10 of her 11
points over the final 6:40 and California escaped with a
hard-fought victory in its home opener.

Ashley Walker scored back-to-back baskets in the final 3 minutes
and finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds despite foul trouble.
Lauren Greif added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists for
the unbeaten Golden Bears (3-0).

Dionne Marsh scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half for
the Lobos (3-1).<

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Yinka Sanni scored 22 points and Meg
Bulger added 21 to lead West Virginia over Cornell.

Chakhia Cole had 17 points and eight rebounds for the
Mountaineers (3-0), who play defending national champion and
top-ranked Tennessee in Charleston on Wednesday.

Cornell fell to 1-2.<

MINNEAPOLIS -- Emily Fox scored 23 points and Minnesota
overcame a 12-point, second-half deficit to beat Louisville in the
final game of the Subway Classic.

Fox's 3-pointer with 3 minutes left tied it for the first time
since the early stages of the second half, and her free throws
clinched the game for the Gophers (4-0).

Angel McCoughtry had 39 points and 12 rebounds for Louisville
(1-2).
