Here are some quick observations from Wednesday's OTA:
In just his third OTA since wrapping up his classroom commitment at Oregon State, rookie safety Al Afalava displayed perfect technique while covering Greg Olsen during a one-on-one drill. Not only did Afalava show impressive speed by running with Olsen, the rookie also found the ball and broke up the pass.
For all the grief I've given Marcus Harrison over his conditioning, the defensive tackle looked to be moving much better Wednesday, working some with Israel Idonije inside on the first team. Harrison possesses the talent to be a standout performer, but staying fit and healthy are the keys.
Corey Graham worked as the primary nickel as Danieal Manning was still nursing a sore hamstring.
Craig Steltz and Kevin Payne ran with the first team at safety, while Garrett Wolfe got increased reps on offense due to Matt Forte and Kevin Jones both being out.
Watching Devin Hester effortlessly field punts, you have to wonder how much better the Bears will be if Hester regains the return magic of '06 and '07.
Lovie Smith again called Hester a "number one" receiver, and singled out Zack Bowman, Jamar Williams, Craig Steltz and Earl Bennett as the most improved performers this off-season.
Smith also said Olsen is ready to take that next step and become a "dominant" player.
