Jaime Moreno could easily sit back and reminisce about his remarkable run, but the 35-year-old forward keeps pushing forward.
Moreno and the Eastern Conference-leading D.C United look for their third straight victory Wednesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark as they face the Kansas City Wizards, who look to overtake the top spot in the conference standings.
After missing United's 3-2 win over the New York Red Bulls on April 26 with a strained Achilles' tendon, Moreno returned Saturday against FC Dallas and scored his first two goals of the season in the second half of a come-from-behind 3-2 victory at RFK Stadium.
"For me, especially that second goal, the composure to come down the middle and get him to lay down and chip over ... not too many guys in our league can do that, and he's been doing that for years," said D.C. coach Tom Soehn, whose team is 3-1-3, tied with Toronto FC for the East lead.
Moreno's two scores pushed his MLS all-time leading total to 124. His assist in United's 1-1 tie with the New England Revolution on April 17 made him the only player in league history with 100 or more goals and 100 or more assists.
"I'm really pleased with the way things are going, but like I've always said, my goal is to maintain that level," said Moreno, the reigning MLS player of the week. "I don't want to have ups and downs. I want to keep this same level so I can contribute to D.C. United."
Moreno, who scored a goal and added an assist in D.C.'s last game against Kansas City -- a 2-0 win on Aug. 2 -- will appear in his 300th career MLS match Wednesday.
He and United -- undefeated in their last three matches -- will take aim at Kansas City goalie Kevin Hartman.
The MLS' all-time saves leader stopped four shots in the Wizards' 1-0 loss to Toronto FC on April 26, but was denied his fourth shutout of the season on a goal by Danny Dichio in the 54th minute.
"He did another nice job of keeping us in the game," Kansas City coach Curt Onalfo told the league's official Web site. "Often when you see a 'keeper making good saves like that it inspires your team to push for the tying goal but it just didn't happen today."
Kansas City (3-3-1) has shut out its last two opponents at home. A victory Wednesday would move the well-rested Wizards into first place in the East prior to their matchup Saturday night at defending MLS Cup champion Columbus.
Kansas City's Davy Arnaud nearly scored his fourth goal of the season in the loss to Toronto, but was stopped from close range in the 44th minute by goalie Stefan Frei. United, though, knows shutting down the talented midfielder could be the key to Wednesday's matchup.
"Davy can change the game easily," D.C. defender Marc Burch told his team's official Web site. "He can shoot from distance, he's good in the air, he's good at dribbling. If you shut him down, there's a good chance you can shut their team down."
