LILLEHAMMER, Norway -- Tino Edelmann of Germany won his first Nordic Combined World Cup event on Sunday, and Johnny Spillane finished fourth for the U.S.
Edelmann took the lead after 7.5 kilometers of the 10K individual race, pulling away at an uphill stretch in the final section. He ended the race 2.2 seconds faster than Koivuranta. Jason Lamy Chappuis of France finished third, 2.3 seconds back.
Spillane, also the top American in Saturday's event, was another 1.1 seconds back for his best result since finishing second at Kuusamo, Finland, in 2007. World champion Bill Demong of Vermontville, N.Y., was the next American finisher in eighth overall.
Spillane finished seventh in the jumping portion and started the cross-country race in the lead pack and fought his way along, taking the lead in two splits before falling to third at the 9K mark.
"It was a pretty good race," said Spillane, of Steamboat Springs, Colo. "The start of it was slow, and had a whole bunch of people together. So, I went to the front to try to break it up a little bit."
Wilhelm Denifl of Austria led after the ski jump,but was caught by Koivuranta in the first kilometer of the race and ended up 14th.
Chappuis leads the overall standings with 305 points, while Edelmann moves up from fifth to second with 254. Eric Frenzel of Germany is third with 225 points.
