Vallenzeri sells for $1.9 million

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Trainer Bob Baffert paid $1.9 million for the colt Vallenzeri on the opening night of Keeneland's April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale.

Keeneland said in a news release it is the highest price paid for a juvenile at public auction so far this year.

Baffert bought Vallenzeri, by Horse of the Year A.P. Indy out of Horse of the Year Azeri, on behalf of client Kaleem Shah. He was consigned by Eddie Woods, agent.

The colt had run an eighth of a mile in 10.1 seconds during the sale's preview day.

Keeneland sold 31 horses Monday for gross receipts of $6.885 million, down 3.4 percent from 2008.
