Soccer-Chelsea reach semis after thrilling 4-4 draw

By Mike Collett

LONDON, April 14 - Chelsea drew a memorable
Champions League quarter-final second leg 4-4 with Liverpool at
Stamford Bridge on Tuesday but reached the semi-finals with a
7-5 aggregate victory over their Premier League rivals.

Liverpool, trailing 3-1 from the first leg at Anfield and
needing to score at least three goals at Stamford Bridge to give
themselves a chance of saving the tie, went 1-0 up after Fabio
Aurelio scored direct from a free-kick after 19 minutes.

They doubled their lead in the 28th minute when Xabi Alonso
sent Chelsea keeper Petr Cech the wrong way from the penalty
spot.

Chelsea, who played poorly in the first half, looked a
transformed side after the break and pulled a goal back after 51
minutes when Didier Drogba got the faintest touch to a Nicolas
Anelka cross.

The home side made it 2-2 when Alex scored with a blistering
free-kick after 57 minutes and they went 3-2 ahead and 6-3 ahead
on aggregate with a Frank Lampard goal after 76 minutes.

Liverpool, though, scored twice in two minutes in the 81st
and 83rd minutes through Lucas and Dirk Kuyt before Lampard
scored his second to force a 4-4 draw and send them through to a
semi-final with Barcelona.
