BigX wasn’t in a good place. He had made some decisions that led him to a place in his life where he didn’t want to be. He was a former football player who no longer competed. He was looking for an outlet for everything he was feeling. That’s when he turned to music.
“I never wanted to be an artist. I grew up wanting to be a football player,” BigX said. “I had to figure something out. I had a friend that was rapping and he gave me some instruments and I just took off with it.”
Originally from Dallas, BigX turned to rap because it provided the best tool for what he had to say.
“The story I had; it was just better coming out of rap.”
The opportunity to create the XFL anthem came out of another song BigX wrote called “Primetime.” He credits his label, UnitedMasters, with expanding his opportunity in this industry.
“UnitedMasters was doing their job and networking my name around and talking about my background,” BigX said. “I was blessed with the opportunity.”
When creating the anthem for the XFL season, BigX collaborated with his producer and UnitedMasters to determine what should be included and what the vibe for the song should be.
“I got a sheet of what to do and what not to do,” BigX said. “Me and my producer went to the studio, he cooked up a beat and I just used the tools they gave me and put it together.”
Growing up in a football-crazy city like Dallas, BigX revels in the opportunity to have his music be the anthem for a professional football league.
“It’s a blessing,” BigX said. “I always thought I’d see myself on ESPN. Then from thinking that dream was over to hearing my voice on ESPN -- it’s amazing. I’ve made it somehow.”
The XFL is about giving players a second chance at achieving their dreams of playing professional football. BigX realizes the second chance he was given and can relate to how the players feel about their new opportunity to play.
“Me having played football and my background, I just knew what type of energy they would need,” he said. “I knew what type of music they would need. I couldn’t come with anything nice and subtle. I had to come the right way.”
The anthem features BigX rapping about fighting to win and representing your city -- themes on which the league was founded.
Everything BigX put into this song came from his experience playing football. He’s grateful to be able to merge his newfound passion of music with his first passion of football.
And though he grew up in Dallas, his heart roots for the underdog Houston Texans. Because he himself feels like an underdog as do players in the XFL. It’s why his song works so well as an anthem for all the players.
You can hear BigX’s anthem “BigXFL” when you tune in to watch the XFL on ESPN.
