WATCH: Michael Menet UA jersey presentation
Offensive lineman Michal Menet has been watching the Under Armour All America game throughout his youth, hoping to one day play in the prestigious game. He will now get that opportunity in January, as the No. 57-ranked prospect received his jersey on Friday.
“It’s just a tremendous accomplishment. It’s everything you work towards from growing up and seeing the game on TV,” he said. “Obviously the goal is to play in college at the next level, but this is a step in that process. Being invited to the game was a tremendous honor to me, and it’s awesome that I get a chance to play in the game.”
Menet has been committed to Penn State since May, and despite being so highly ranked, kept most of his process quiet and out of the public eye.
Like a true offensive lineman, he didn’t want a lot of the attention on himself.
“I’m not a real showy kind of guy, so it’s not my personality to flaunt every time I got an offer. I threw a tweet out here and there, but it’s not really my personality,” he said. “My family was a huge factor, but it was my decision to keep it all in-house. We just went about it that way because we thought that was the best way to do it.”
Q&A with Michal Menet:
What players are you looking forward to competing with or against at the UA All America Game?
All of them. It would be great to make some new relationships. Really looking forward to being there with some of the Penn State commits. I believe Miles Sanders and Shane Simmons will be there, so it will be cool to spend time with those guys.
As far as going against players, I saw Rashan Gary in the New Jersey camp, so getting a chance to go against him would be cool. I’m not sure how teams will work but maybe Shane, too, that would be cool.
If you could start a team with any other player in your class, who would it be?
Probably another offensive lineman. Greg Little, he’s obviously the best tackle in the class, so probably him. I believe that football starts up front, so maybe a guy like him.
What was your earliest football memory?
I played fullback in youth. Probably one of my earliest memories was a 31 dive. I got the ball and took it 60 yards up the middle to the house. That’s probably one of my favorite earlier memories. It might have been my second or third year in youth.
Which football player did you watch as a kid?
I always liked the Eagles, so first Donovan McNabb then Michael Vick. Jeremiah Trotter, he was always a cool guy to watch.
If you could take on any pro in their sport, who would it be?
I would want to go against J.J. Watt because he’s the best out there. I highly doubt I would win. I think down the road it would be cool to see him, just to say I went against J.J. Watt, even if he kicked my butt.
Why do you wear your number (72)?
I’ve been wearing that since freshman year since I started. One of my brother’s friends wore it and I just picked that number and carried it through the four years now.
What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I try to sing. I sing loud and proud. It’s not good, but I do it as loud as I can. I grew up listening to all the classics because of my parents. If you name it I can probably sing it. My brother is a huge country guy, so I’ll sing that. I’m not a huge rapper, but every once in a while if a good song comes on I will. My mom and dad always listen to The Temptations, so I know a couple of their songs, Michael Jackson. My dad likes Van Morrison, stuff like that.
