NEW YORK -- With his name swirling around in trade rumors and the New York Knicks continuing to slide, Carmelo Anthony’s week got even worse with news he was snubbed by coaches for the All-Star Game.
Anthony’s streak of seven All-Star appearances was snapped when the Eastern Conference's reserves were announced on Thursday night. Coaches voted for Cleveland’s Kevin Love, Indiana’s Paul George and Atlanta’s Paul Millsap as the frontcourt players ahead of Anthony. And they elected four point guards, voting for Boston’s Isaiah Thomas, Washington’s John Wall, Toronto’s Kyle Lowry and Charlotte’s Kemba Walker.
"A little disappointed, but at this point it’s kind of bigger things to worry about," Anthony said before playing the Hornets on Friday night about not being in the All-Star Game. "I mean, as a competitor you want to participate in that week, knowing how much fun it is, knowing the importance of being down there and enjoying that break, that’s something I’ll miss the most."
The NBA's head coaches vote for the 14 All-Star reserves for the East and West squads. They pick seven players in their respective conferences, consisting of two guards, three frontcourt players and two additional players at either position group. Coaches cannot vote for players from their own teams.
Anthony is averaging 22.7 points and 6.1 rebounds this season. He has been on a tear of late, averaging 30.2 points in the Knicks' last four games. Unfortunately, the Knicks lost three of those four games and have dropped 14 of their last 18.
Anthony did not want to speculate about why coaches did not pick him as an All-Star reserve.
"I don’t know," Anthony said when asked if he thinks the Knicks' poor record played a part. "I don’t really want to get into what happened. I don’t know."
The Knick forward said he does plan on enjoying himself during the break.
"I damn sure am," he said. "Yeah, I’m going to enjoy the seven-day break. I don’t know what I’m going to do, but I’m going to enjoy it."
