Tom Coughlin resigned as New York Giants head coach on Monday as one of 13 coaches in NFL history to win multiple Super Bowls.
He is the seventh coach in NFL history with 100 wins and two Super Bowl victories for a single team, according to Elias Sports Bureau research. The others are Hall of Famers Don Shula, Tom Landry, Chuck Noll and Joe Gibbs, as well as Bill Belichick and Mike Shanahan.
Coughlin’s 12-year tenure as the Giants head coach is the second-longest in franchise history behind Hall of Famer Steve Owen, who coached the team for 23 seasons from 1931 to 1953. Coughlin was 8-3 in the postseason with the Giants, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer Bill Parcells for the best playoff record in franchise history. Both former Giants coaches won two Super Bowls.
The Giants have the best postseason record in the NFL since Coughlin’s first season with the team in 2004 at .727. The Pittsburgh Steelers (.667) and New England Patriots (.652) rank second and third in postseason win percentage since 2004.
The Giants’ win in Super Bowl XLVI over the Patriots made Coughlin, then 65, the oldest head coach to win a Super Bowl.

Coughlin, 69, has 170 career wins as a head coach in his NFL career, tied with Mike Shanahan for the 11th-most wins all time. One hundred and two of those 170 wins came with the Giants, the second most in team history behind Owen’s 153. Parcells ranks third on that list with 77 wins as Giants head coach.
Eli Manning has started all 181 career games with Coughlin as the head coach, the third-most games for a quarterback-head coach combination in NFL history. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick have been together for 223 games. Hall of Famers Dan Marino and Don Shula were together for 186 games.
Giants since Super Bowl XLVI
The Giants have not had a winning record since 2012. Their three straight seasons with a losing record is the franchise’s longest streak since they went eight straight years with a losing record from 1973 to '80.
Coughlin has two Super Bowl titles with the Giants, but also lots of seasons without playoff success. According to Elias Sports Bureau research, Coughlin’s 10 seasons without a playoff win as coach of the Giants ranks fourth among coaches with one team under the current playoff format (since 1990).
The Giants haven’t made the playoffs since winning Super Bowl XLVI in the 2011 season. Their four straight seasons without a playoff berth is the longest streak since they missed the postseason in 17 straight years from 1964 to '80.
From 2004 to '11, the Giants won 58 percent of their games, made five playoff appearances and won two Super Bowls. They won 44 percent of their games and had no playoff appearances from 2012 to '15.
