Maryland announced the hiring of longtime NFL assistant Ted Monachino as defensive coordinator, as the team begins spring practice Tuesday afternoon.
Monachino, a former defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts, spent the past two seasons at North Carolina, coaching the Tar Heels defensive line in 2024. He has spent time in the state of the Maryland with the Baltimore Ravens, where he coached Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil and other standouts as outside linebackers coach from 2010 to 2015. He won a Super Bowl with Baltimore in 2013.
The 58-year-old made college stops at James Madison, Missouri State, Boise State and Arizona State early in his career, and served as an analyst with Missouri in 2018 and with North Carolina in 2023. After the 2018 season, he briefly accepted the defensive coordinator job at Kansas State before leaving for a role with the Chicago Bears.
The move is part of a coaching staff shakeup for Maryland following a 4-8 season. Monachino replaces Brian Williams, who left last month for the same role at Jacksonville State under new coach Charles Kelly. Maryland coach Mike Locksley also brought in Pep Hamilton, a former NFL offensive coordinator with several stops at the pro and college levels, to oversee the Terrapins offense.
The team finished 105th nationally in points allowed and 80th nationally in yards allowed last season.
