Mohammed Hussamuddin repeated his bronze medal-winning effort from 2018 Gold Coast games after losing to Joseph Commey of Ghana in the semifinals of the men's 57kg division in boxing. The Indian boxer started off well but lost his way in the bout, eventually losing by a 4-1 split decision.
This is India's second medal in boxing at the Commonwealth Games so far, although there are plenty of boxers contesting gold later.
Maintaining their distance, Hussamuddin and Commey started off a bit cautiously, before the Indian started to rain in a few jabs with his left hook. As Commey attempted to close the distance and stay aggressive, Hussamuddin picked his moment to launch a couple of counter-attacks. Towards the end of the round the pair eschewed defence in favour of aggression with Commey connecting a few times. Overall though, the judges ruled the first round in favour of the Indian boxer.
Commey had Hussamuddin on the defensive in the second round, with the Indian boxer shuffling back towards the ropes or closing the distance into the clinch. Hussamuddin launched a few counters, but at the end of the second round, he only had one judge scoring in his favour.
The third round progressed much like the second round, with Commey quite aggressive and catching Hussamuddin in the face with a right hook. The bout descended into a slugfest with a minute to go. Commey appeared to have had the better of the exchange, and the judges eventually ruled in his favour in a 4-1 split decision.
Earlier, the 28-year-old from Nizamabad defeated Tryagain Morning Ndevelo of Namibia in a 4-1 split verdict to advance to the semifinals.had won a bronze in Gold Coast four years ago. Hussamuddin had to work hard for the win as it was a fiercely contested bout which could have gone either way.
