So overall, a back-and-forth day's play has ended with New Zealand having the advantage. Kane Williamson opted not to use Mitchell Santner, his premier spinner, at all for some reason. What it meant was that his fast bowlers had to deal with a heavy workload on the opening day of the first Test, especially their strike bowlers Tim Southee and Trent Boult who bowled 52.3 overs between them. They will now get to put their feet up after a hard day's toil. How will New Zealand respond to this total? Join us tomorrow to find out. Until then..

So it will be Southee who gets the five-for. New Zealand needed exactly one day to bowl Bangladesh out and they had to endure their share of frustrating passages of play, especially when the short ball did not work in their favour against the lower order. That passage made for some bizarre bowling from New Zealand as they kept banging it in short on a surface that had no pace. A significant lot was taken off the ball after it landed on the surface which meant the batsmen had enough time to suss out the bounce and deal with it by ducking under or getting on top of it to play it. The pitch did get quicker late in the day, and in the end, their short-ball strategy did fetch them wickets, but they would have certainly liked to be more clinical. For a while, it seemed as though they were listlessly going through the motions, waiting for something to happen. That, after all the hard work had been done and they had an inexperienced lower order to bowl to. Credit to Bangladesh's debutants Nurul Hasan and Mazmul Hossain Shanto for showing the application and patience to grind it out which was largely absent when some of their senior players were batting. Not to forget Kamrul Islam Rabbi who batted 63 balls for 2 runs. New Zealand also had their share of concerns on the field with all the dropped catches. But overall, they will be pleased with the total they have restricted Bangladesh to after opting to bowl on a flat deck.

Gary MacLennan: "the last pair used up seven overs for 17 runs. I am sure NZ were delighted to see them struggle to little or no effect. A flurry of strokes would have gotten as much and would have given BD more time to bowl at the NZ openers. Poor tactics."

Southee to Kamrul Islam Rabbi, OUT, rapped on the pads and given out by umpire Paul Reiffel. That was a superb ball, angling in on a fuller length and straightening late to beat the inside edge to ping him on the pad. Bangladesh opt for a review and replays confirm that there was no edge involved and the ball would have hit middle and off

Boult to Rubel Hossain, no run, Rubel has copped a painful blow below his elbow. And it's on his bowling arm. He's down, in some pain and is being attended to. That was one nasty blow. It was a hort of good length ball and he was forward looking to defend. But the ball did not bounce as much and pinged him back on the bottom part of the elbow. That was a horrendous blow. Still being attended to and it seems like we will have an extended break in play

Boult to Rubel Hossain, 2 runs, moves across before backing away as the bowler fires it full and on leg stump and it is squeezed out to deep fine leg. They charge back for the second and the throw comes on at the non-striker's end. Some mix-up there, so there was a chance of a run out but they make it back
