Bez: "279 is a very formidable score on this pitch. Probably worth 330-ish on a typical ODI pitch. One of the Kiwi batsmen will have to play a monster innings if they hope to even the series. With Rabada and Tahir in their arsenal, SA's probably feeling pretty confident right now."

Nick: "What's going on? Are nz trying to throw this match?! How can you go from bowling 3 overs of precision Yorkers a week ago to bowling length balls made for smacking. So disappointing. "

Mark: "This NZ side is so frustrating. Kane seems to have a formulaic approach that the Boult and Southee have to bowl the final overs. Southee is NOT a death bowler. He is too expensive most of the time. This happens time and time again, they make the same mistakes and they are just clueless how to bowl sides out and keep runs down. Very hard to be a NZ fan sometimes."

5.40pm New Zealand looked shaky in the middle overs as Kane Williamson figured out who to bowl on a pitch that tempted him to keep making changes - he made 20 bowling changes through this innings. It was haphazard from the Kiwis after reducing South Africa to 143 for 5. Patel, by far, was their best bowler. Neesham was impressive too, as was Santner. But in their attempts at running through the fifth bowling option, New Zealand failed to account for the possibility of their seniors going for runs. Boult and Southee both went for 70 runs off their 10.

South Africa were ahead of the curve, psychologically and didn't let the sharp turn early in the game play on their minds. Amla's innings exemplified that, while Faf was solid in laying that plan. However, once again, it took an AB finish to get South Africa at least 30-40 runs over what you would call par on this pitch. New Zealand have some work to do.
