5:45pm A few Afghanistan players come up to Mahmudullah and offer a congratulatory handshake. He may not have gotten to his hundred, but this was a knock that had class written all over it. Very early during it, he picked up a back injury, although if you watched him bat, you'd never have guessed he was being plagued by it.

He kept things ticking throughout his innings and was helped by Mehidy holding firm at the other end. Bangladesh's stand-in skipper notched up a fifty too and they stitched together a 145-run stand (a record-breaking partnership for Bangladesh in Sharjah), which eventually helped them get past the 240-run mark.

Afghanistan were a little patchy with the ball. They gave away too many runs at the start and then lost the plot as the Mahmudullah-Mehidy partnership grew. But right towards the end, Omarzai picked up wickets and ensured that Bangladesh did not cross 250. This still looks like a steep chase, considering the conditions, but Afghanistan have the quality to last the distance. Join Himanshu in a bit for the second innings.

Najmul Hossain Shanto: Very happy. The way we started, the first ten overs we batted brilliantly. After that, we didn't execute our shots properly. But then the partnership (during the middle overs), very happy. Brilliant batting - the way Miraz showed his calmness. That was the plan and he (Mahmudullah) showed his experience, batting just one ball at a time. Little disappointed that he could not score his hundred but the team is in a good position. The conditions are a little different in the night. (On his injury) Feeling a little uncomfortable, hope I will be fine.

Azmatullah Omarzai to Mahmudullah, 1 run, OUT, zipped in full on off. Mahmudullah gives it all he has but can only tug it towards deep square leg. He has no option but to chance his luck on the second and he comes up second-best. The throw is accurate and Gurbaz whips off the bails quickly enough. Mahmudullah falls for 98, and Bangladesh finish with 244!

Last ball coming up. Five-for or hundred? Or neither? The crowd comes to life too

Azmatullah Omarzai to Shoriful Islam, 1 run, direct hit would have been out! Back of a length on off. Shoriful jabs it towards point and by the time the fielder gathers, Mahmudullah is almost past Shoriful. Rahmat had a shy and had he hit, Mahmudullah was not even in the frame

Azmatullah Omarzai to Mahmudullah, 1 run, shortish on leg stump. Mahmudullah hangs back and then hoicks it towards deep backward square leg. Just a single. Could he have denied the run and backed himself to hit two boundaries?

Azmatullah Omarzai to Shoriful Islam, 1 run, angled in full on middle and off. Shoriful bunts it towards backward point and Mahmudullah tears across to the other end to regain strike

Shoriful is the new batter in. If he gets it in the middle of his bat, the ball can fly. But he might want to get his more experienced partner on strike. Around the wicket

Azmatullah Omarzai to Nasum Ahmed, OUT, bulls-eye from Omarzai! Another cutter, pitching on a back of a length on middle and off. Deviates away with the angle and Nasum is completely foxed. He swings way too early and then watches on as the ball topples the off bail. Mahmudullah still off strike, and Omarzai has four!

Azmatullah Omarzai to Mahmudullah, 1 leg bye, angled in on a length on leg stump. Mahmudullah swishes at it and misses. The ball rolls off his thigh pad behind square for a leg bye

Omarzai to bowl the last over. Can Mahmudullah get to his hundred? Can Bangladesh get to 250?

Fazalhaq Farooqi to Mahmudullah, 1 leg bye, massive appeal! Zipped in very full in and around off. Mahmudullah looks for the reverse-lap and makes a mess of it. Seems to get struck on the pad and that interests Farooqi greatly. He seems to find a supporter in Gurbaz and Afghanistan eventually take it upstairs. Definitely came off the pad but the impact might have been outside the line. Yes, confirmed by Ball Tracking. Impact well outside off and Mahmudullah stays!
