5:06pm I see Morne Morkel doing a mock run-up. M Vijay has come skipping out, Dhawan more relaxed in his trail...my eyes didn't fool me, but Faf has. It's Philander with the ball. Three slips and a gully for him. Vijay is ready...

Anand V: "It will be India's day if they don't lose more than one wicket in this last hour. Vijay needs to be still there tomorrow morning."

Dhaval: "Five catches for Saha in the innings..."

Mahesh: ""Well a great start to begin this tour for India... the next 14 overs would set the tone for this test match and for the series""

Shah: "The strike rates of Sauth Africa middle order batsmen look like ODI strike rates. Good attacking cricket by them after early wickets!"

4:58pm South Africa will take 286 happily. They were probably thinking 400 when they elected to bat, but Bhuvneshwar Kumar had them doubting that decision inside 20 minutes. It's a good recovery, and they will be proud of that scorecard from No. 4 onwards. Everyone chipped in.

On the other hand, India won't be too unhappy either. In the bigger picture, restricting South Africa to 286 after losing the toss is a superb effort. That they're batting on the first day of the tour after losing the toss is no mean feat. I believe they'll have to face about 14 overs this evening. Have the conditions eased out?
