Taskin Ahmed to Akash Deep, no run, peach first ball. On a good length, making him play the angle, and then leaving him after pitching. Too good to take the edge

In comes Akash Deep. Can Bangladesh salvage something and run through the tail?

W
Taskin Ahmed to Jadeja, OUT, Jadeja won't get a hundred. The partnership ends at 199. A mental error. He left all these balls last over. Short of a length, angling across, no need to play at it, but he just pokes at it, and edges it through to Das

9.32am The new ball is taken. Taskin Ahmed ready to bowl. Four slips in place

9.30am Bangladesh just breaking their huddle. Already behind by 10 overs, I doubt they will start the day on time. The umpires were seen asking the players to get on with it.

9.20am Dinesh Karthik says batting will get easier on this pitch because the moisture is less, and the sun is out. India have the second new ball to handle right away. Karthik says the pitch will not break up in the middle, which means India needed all the runs Ashwin and Jadeja put on yesterday.

Manu: "Funny how Jaddu gets called a Chennai Super King while Ashwin does not. A lot of us old-time CSK fans still like to think of Ashwin as a CSK product :) He was part of the 2010 OGs, along with Hayden and Muralitharan"

9.10am Time to catch up on how our correspondents saw yesterday. Alagappan Muthu says Chennai + Ashwin = magic, and Mohammad Isam writes about Hasan Mahmud's standout but simple ways.

9am Welcome to day two. A Chennai boy and a Chennai Super King in the middle. They will also bowl later in the day. No reason to stay away from Chepauk if you are in Chennai and have the time to watch the cricket. It's 31 degrees already, and likely to rise as high as 34 later in the day. Not sure I want to field a lot today. Or bat under all that armour.

Shan: "That's the *7th* wicket partnership for you all ..Thala for a reason ..." On that note, let's call it a day here. Do check out Sidharth Monga's end-of-day report. Mohammad Isam and Alagappan Muthu will be dissecting the major themes of the day. Hope you enjoy it all and return tomorrow.

R Ashwin: Always special to play in front of home crowd, it's a ground I completely love. Last time I got a hundred here, you [Ravi Shastri] were the coach. It does feel special. Helps that I'm coming off a T20 tournament, worked quite a bit on batting and playing shots. I've always been giving the ball a waft. On a surface like this, it's better to go hard like Rishabh does. It's an old-school Chennai surface with bounce and carry. When there is width, you can give it a tonk. Love playing when there is bounce and carry, enjoyed myself today. Jadeja was of real help, there was a point where I was sweating and tiring but Jaddu helped me through the phase. He's been solid and one of our best batters. He told me we don't have to convert twos into threes, which was useful for me (smiles). Overspin will fetch bounce, spinners will come into play later. There is enough for the quicks as of now. The new ball will do a bit tomorrow, we'll have to start afresh. It is still damp underneath, as it dries out hope it quickens up.

Sampath has a stat - Players with multiple hundreds and multiple five-fors at a venue in Tests - Ashwin (at Chepauk) is now one of the five players with this double.

5:02pm, day 1, stumps: A perfect day for the Chennai duo - one by birth and the other via CSK. Both the morning and afternoon sessions saw 88 runs and 3 wickets. But 163 runs without a wicket in the final session ensured India were not just out of trouble but also came out with an advantage. Ashwin was the one who changed the tempo, attacking every ball he saw fit, which was almost every other ball at one point. His back-foot punches were crisp, he got going with boundaries through point and cover but went straight and opened up the leg side as the innings progressed. Jadeja was solid at the other end. Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana did pose the odd challenge but Mehidy not being allowed to settle gave India an out. A swift run rate helped too. It's 4.23 overall and just over 5 in the 32-over session. The over rate has been poor. Bangladesh have been behind throughout and fell ten overs short in the end. Now that 80 overs have been bowled, they could cop some punishment.
