- BATSMENRBM4s6sSR12.5 thick edge to third slip and England have their second! Hitting the length, half a bat's width of away movement, Bairstow stoops and scoops low in front of his body. Reward for an excellent first hour from England. Will Elgar rue batting first? It's not been easy going so far 35/24.2 inside edge, and that had been coming! A nipbacker from Anderson, Erwee was half forward, uncertain of his angles, playing away from his pads and a thin snick almost wrongfoots Foakes. He snaffles well with a late direction change, and England are up and running! 3/114.3 got him, this is terrific bowling from Broad! Hits a good length, angling in towards off stump, and Petersen's feet are stuck as he looks to defend this. Ends up getting squared up as the ball straightens off the deck with fairly steep bounce, and he edges it straight into the lap of first slip 41/321.3 another miscued pull, and Stokes has struck in his first over. And Markram, having looked so good, is out for 14. Again the ball stops on him as he looks to pull from the line of off stump or just outside. Stops and maybe bounces a little more. Markram is through his shot early, and he top-edges it high in the air, presenting Foakes an easy catch running to his left 68/423.4 huge appeal, and it's given! van der Dussen has reviewed, though... Stokes gets this to come back in quite a long way as he gets a biggish stride forward to defend. Did that strike his front pad in line? van der Dussen's bat is drawn in front of his body while defending, and the ball snakes in, past his inside edge, and hits his front pad somewhere in the region of off stump. Somewhere in the region is right - umpire's call is the verdict of ball-tracking, and, wow, umpire's call on height as well, with the ball predicted to kiss the top of the bails. Quite a brave call from Chris Gaffaney to give that, with van der Dussen quite a long way forward, given how much bounce there is in this pitch 76/537.6 got him, that's the perfect delivery from Broad. Really not much Verreynne could have done about this. It's on the perfect length to have him playing neither forward or back, it's angling in towards off stump and forcing him to defend, then it straightens off the deck - not a whole lot, but just enough to catch the edge through to the keeper. You can tell how good the length is when you see Verreyne stumbling forward after he's edged the ball. Squared up and entirely off balance 108/830.3 full and straight, pinned on the shin and gone! There's just the chance he got outside the line, and so Harmer reviews... there's certainly no bat involved. Yep, that is more than straight enough! Anderson's second, South Africa's sixth. England are on the move after lunch 92/630.4 utterly, totally plumb! Two in two for Anderson! A planted front foot, wicket to wicket, no escaping the finger of doom here! Playing around the full length, angling into the stumps. South Africa are stumbling badly now! 92/753.2 This one carries! A big wind-up from Rabada, a fat hack off the back foot, flies hard to Root at slip who pouches in front of his chest. Part one complete! 151/1050.1 full and plumb! Nortje is pinned on the crease, and has nowhere to turn. He does review, because he has to, but this looks hopeful. Sure enough, it's hitting the top of leg! Robinson is back in the wickets! Playing across the line to fateful effect. Big start to the session for England. 143/9Extras12 (b 2, lb 4, nb 6)TOTAL151 all out (53.2 Overs, RR: 2.83)Fall of wickets: 1-3 (Sarel Erwee, 4.2 ov), 2-35 (Dean Elgar, 12.5 ov), 3-41 (Keegan Petersen, 14.3 ov), 4-68 (Aiden Markram, 21.3 ov), 5-76 (Rassie van der Dussen, 23.4 ov), 6-92 (Simon Harmer, 30.3 ov), 7-92 (Keshav Maharaj, 30.4 ov), 8-108 (Kyle Verreynne, 37.6 ov), 9-143 (Anrich Nortje, 50.1 ov), 10-151 (Kagiso Rabada, 53.2 ov)

- BATSMENRBM4s6sSR1.4 snorter! Round the wicket, perfect line and length, Lees places his bat down the original line, and snicks the seaming delivery straight to the keeper! South Africa are cock-a-hoop. That's the response they needed! 5/135.4 Crawley's nicked off! He really didn't do a lot wrong there. His decision-making has been leave the wide ones, defend the off stump, but this is just too good from the exceptional Nortje - high pace, tight line, just a nibble of movement off the seam, and the slenderest of edges through to the keeper! South Africa have both overnight batters, and the deficit hasn't yet been seen off... now then... 147/510.1 cleaned up at pace! Pope is done in familiar fashion, toppling forward into a misaligned defence, and exploding the top of off stump, via a thin inside edge! 34/213.5 edged, juggled, clings on! "Oh no," says Root, at the very moment the ball kisses the bat, he just couldn't resist nudging outside his eyeline, and after one, two, three, four fumbles, Erwee clutches the ball to his chest at first slip, and South Africa have landed the big fish! 43/333.4 that was coming! Nortje's sharp pace allied to tight-lined reverse swing, back of a length, Bairstow pushes hard on the angle into his stumps, a thin snick and first slip clings on! Another handy stay from England's form batter, but that's a crucial breakthrough for South Africa! 134/489.2 huge hack off a good length, and it's all over! Stokes wanted to put the hammer down, but he picked the wrong ball. Not quite short enough for the launch over the leg side, a leading edge skews out to cover, and Elgar backpedals to end a mighty knock 320/694.3 raptor down! Broad has a gallop, misses with a loose drive as he gets too close to the ball, and Verreynne claws the ball down to pick off the stumping. That was fun 361/7102.3 edged and taken. Full ball outside off, slow through the air and spinning away. Robinson pushes at it, gets an outside edge and a regulation catch for Markram at first slip 395/8106.4 down the track and looks to defend but once again ends up playing inside the line of the ball and misses. This time the ball crashes into the off stump. And with that, England have declared 415/9Extras27 (b 6, lb 5, nb 6, w 10)TOTAL415/9d (106.4 Overs, RR: 3.89)Did not bat: JM AndersonFall of wickets: 1-5 (Alex Lees, 1.4 ov), 2-34 (Ollie Pope, 10.1 ov), 3-43 (Joe Root, 13.5 ov), 4-134 (Jonny Bairstow, 33.4 ov), 5-147 (Zak Crawley, 35.4 ov), 6-320 (Ben Stokes, 89.2 ov), 7-361 (Stuart Broad, 94.3 ov), 8-395 (Ollie Robinson, 102.3 ov), 9-415 (Jack Leach, 106.4 ov)

- BATSMENRBM4s6sSR17.6 snicks the edge this time! Back round the wicket, fuller length, habitual climb off the seam and a hint of movement away from the bat, Erwee is lured, Foakes stoops low, scoops up the chance. And both the openers are gone! 39/212.5 poles away! Stunning from Anderson! That one just holds its line, with Elgar minded for the one that nips away. Out comes the off stump, plucked clean out of the ground, and England are up and running in the first 15 minutes! 33/167.3 snorter from Stokes! Just sensational from the captain, he's bent his back for the effort ball, climbing from nowhere into the gloves, such a tight line, Petersen flings his weight backwards, but there's no place to hide. Foakes grabs his second of the session, and another gutsy knock has been picked off by a pumped-up gamechanger 151/522.4 got him, Broad strikes again, but he looks at Chris Gaffaney just to check. Gets the thumbs-up from the umpire before he feels ready to celebrate. Superb delivery, but you'd want to ask if Markram really had to play that shot. On the fuller side of a length, fifth-stump line, not full enough for the cover drive, but he goes for the shot anyway, playing on the up with an angled bat. Straightens ever so slightly, bounces a touch more maybe, and a thick edge flies to second slip at a comfortable lap height 54/365.3 gone this time! No doubt about that edge! Van der Dussen was still smarting from that previous ball, maybe, flinches loosely outside his eyeline as Stokes bends the ball away at pace, and Foakes gobbles an audible nick! A brave innings ends before it can get restarted, and now England are back in the hunt for a quick kill 141/480.2 ping! Back goes the top of off! Old Trafford erupts! That was outstanding new-ball bowling, hitting the ideal length, sharp nip back off the seam, through a rusty gate, and splattering the timbers! 172/681.4 gone this time, fences it straight to fourth slip! He's just plugged away in that fourth/fifth-stump channel, getting the ball to hold its line there. Maharaj just stands there and punches, feet getting off the ground but not moving forward, back or sideways, and the thick edge is gobbled up by Pope with both hands to his left, at waist height 175/782.6 got him, this is too good from Anderson. Ever so slightly fuller length than the previous ball, and an inch closer to the stumps. Then it straightens late once again, and Rabada, looking to drive through mid-off, edges it thick and low to Root at first slip 178/883.5 and just like that, South Africa are nine down. Typical Robinson wicket, straightens from just back of a length in the corridor, gets a bit of extra bounce, and Nortje actually does pretty well to get a little feather on this as he hangs his bat outside off stump 179/985.1 bowled him, Robinson finishes with an absolute corker! Four wickets for him, and five in the Test match. An excellent comeback. Caps it off with a beauty that hits the top of off stump. Angled in, straightening past the outside edge, and Ngidi seems to be showing a full face and doing most things right, but he realises too late that he's nowhere near the line of the ball 179/10Extras17 (b 8, lb 2, nb 7)TOTAL179 all out (85.1 Overs, RR: 2.1)Fall of wickets: 1-33 (Dean Elgar, 12.5 ov), 2-39 (Sarel Erwee, 17.6 ov), 3-54 (Aiden Markram, 22.4 ov), 4-141 (Rassie van der Dussen, 65.3 ov), 5-151 (Keegan Petersen, 67.3 ov), 6-172 (Simon Harmer, 80.2 ov), 7-175 (Keshav Maharaj, 81.4 ov), 8-178 (Kagiso Rabada, 82.6 ov), 9-179 (Anrich Nortje, 83.5 ov), 10-179 (Lungi Ngidi, 85.1 ov)
