4.09pm So, that was a highly effective job from England's bowlers, no-one really got properly collared - the Currans had the toughest of the treatment but all things are relative. But Adil Rashid's wrist-spin was at times unfathomable, and Archer's rockets were typically frugal and penetrative. "The pitch was a bit slow," notes Rashid on Sky. England will have had a good look at the conditions, and you would back them to take this one down with some ease after a piecemeal display from South Africa's batsman: lots of starts, not enough finishes, and a notably fallow period in the second half of the innings when they simply had to regroup or get bowled out cheaply. England, with Rashid at 11, won't have the same problem, you'd imagine.

"Currans: 1-61 (6 overs), The rest: 4-84 (14 overs)" ... Matt Roller, our baby-faced stats-sassin, is killing them softly with numbers...

Paul ALDERMAN: "And there was me rubbishing Tom Curran - 'only 7 runs off the last over'. Well done Morgan. Hat tip. " He's got ticker, I'll grant him that.

Alan will be here shortly to take up the cudgels.

19.6
1b
TK Curran to Rabada, 1 bye, a wipe through the line, misses everything, including the leg stump. Buttler shies off-balance as they scamper the single, and that's the end of that
19.5
4
TK Curran to Rabada, FOUR, another wide yorker, but this one comes out as a full toss, and it's battered hard on the up through the covers! Looks as though it'll be cut off on the edge of the rope, but Jordan's stretch can't claw it in. Not the best effort by his high standards
19.4
0
TK Curran to Rabada, no run, round the wicket, and that's perfection from Curran. Nailing the wide yorker, from round the wicket, inches inside the guide-line. Can't hit those
19.3
1
TK Curran to van der Dussen, 1 run, flapped to the on-side, hitting through the fuller length. A decent start to this death over for TC
19.2
0
TK Curran to van der Dussen, no run, a full toss into the body, and he gets away with it! Looks good as a dot ball, but that was cue-ended as vdD swung through his shot too soon
19.1
1
TK Curran to Rabada, 1 run, low full toss, and Archer hesitates fatefully at wide long-on! The wind held the shot up, and in the end he had to bail out and gather it on the bounce

Tom Curran it is to finish off

END OF OVER:

W
Jordan to Linde, 2 runs, OUT, knee-high full-toss, drilled hard to mid-off, where a fumble from Stokes persuades them to push for a second and a third as Stokes loses his footing in his haste to make amends... and that's a fatal decision! The chase, the shy, the gather ... the decision! Jordan whips off the bails with Linde well short, after a battling knock

GF Linde run out 29 (20b 2x4 1x6) SR: 145.00

18.5
1
Jordan to van der Dussen, 1 run, driven, reaching for a ball that never quite arrives, another single into the covers

Nick: "Looking like good captaincy to bowl those 2 overs from Stokes so TKC doesn't have to bowl out. Great to have options innit" I suspect he might still bowl the final over. It's what his recognised strength is, and Morgan is very good at backing his players even on difficult days

18.4
1
Jordan to Linde, 1 run, right into the blockhole, good areas from Jordan, poked out to the off side for another single
18.3
2
Jordan to Linde, 2 runs, chipped off the pads once more, finds the gap on the leg side

Suyog Dhabu: "Can Linde do a Tewatia*here? (*Refer IPL 2020)" Now that would be handy!

18.2
2
Jordan to Linde, 2 runs, flipped to the on-side, a low full-toss, excellent running, pushing for the second from the outset and making it well with a dive
18.1
4
Jordan to Linde, FOUR, a precious boundary first-up! Not a lot wrong with the ball, a blockhole ball from round the wicket, but Linde opened the face well and squeezed the edge through two men behind square

END OF OVER:
18 | 15 Runs | SA: 127/5 | RR: 7.05

  • George Linde18 (15b)
  • Rassie van der Dussen23 (26b)
  • Tom Curran3-0-31-1
  • Jofra Archer4-0-18-1

Two overs to go... best case from here is 160-odd, you'd think. But 140-odd might be more realistic. Here's Jordan

17.6
1
TK Curran to Linde, 1 run, fuller length, under the eyeline, an open-faced drive to backward point and that's the over SA needed
17.5
6
TK Curran to Linde, SIX, suddenly, Linde is on it like a bonnet! TC hits the deck outside off, and Linde is waiting for it, back in the crease, moshing a pull onto the grass at wide long-on!
17.4
4
TK Curran to Linde, FOUR, finally, some true intent! Curran aims wide again, and this time Linde is ready for it as he misses his length, a swingeing slap through the line, and past the cover sweeper! SA's first boundary since the 10th over
17.3
1
TK Curran to van der Dussen, 1 run, back of a length, open face, pushed to point
17.2
1
TK Curran to Linde, 1 run, bottom-handed aggression but can't beat the man at mid-off, hitting through a very full length from TC

Krishen: "Meant to be a belter of a pitch - great bowling or average batting?" better than average bowling, below average batting

17.2
1w
TK Curran to Linde, 1 wide, very wide line from round the wicket, a touch unlucky as the ball skims past the guideline. Think Archer's first ball of the World Cup super over!
17.1
1
TK Curran to van der Dussen, 1 run, right up to the pads, scuffed to the leg side. Yep, it's another single

TC's back with an innings to close out

END OF OVER:
17 | 4 Runs | SA: 112/5 | RR: 6.58

  • George Linde6 (11b)
  • Rassie van der Dussen21 (24b)
  • Jofra Archer4-0-18-1
  • Chris Jordan3-0-17-1
16.6
0
Archer to Linde, no run, a flashy splat of bat outside off, but once more, there's a lack of finesse to unpick Archer's quality offerings. South Africa are sinking fast
16.6
1w
Archer to Linde, 1 wide, bouncer, too short and wild for the umpire's liking
16.5
0
Archer to Linde, no run, back of a length, sharp pace, Linde hops into line to defend
16.4
0
Archer to Linde, no run, yorker. Perfectly served up from round the wicket, and very well dug out to be fair, dragging his toe out of the firing line. But nothing doing there runs-wise
16.3
1
Archer to van der Dussen, 1 run, angled bat, jabbed down to third man
16.2
1
Archer to Linde, 1 run, whittled off the pads for another single... other than misdirected wides, boundaries have been notably scarce
