Varahan: "20 overs before stumps, if SA can get couple of wickets, they are back in the game."
Badar: "I can truly understand SA's fans being critical of their team's performance but bear in mind that this team is playing its very first day of cricket here in totally alien conditions with security and Covid in the background. They're the very first one among the big guns to visit this unchanted territory. Not a bad performance after all. "
3.57pm An allround bowling performance - with four bowlers sharing the wickets. Five for the spinners, three to the pacers and two run outs, and it's those run-outs that Pakistan will be most pleased with and South Africa will be ruing tremendously. So many what-ifs for the South Africans. What if Rassie van der Dussen did not attempt the quick single, what if Temba Bavuma didn't go for the second. Both looked really good but alas. In fact, every South African batsman looked good, except perhaps Aiden Markram, but they simply could not get that one giant partnership of say 80-100 runs. In hindsight, even Quinton de Kock will be disappointed with his shot selection.
Nauman took two on debut, Yasir picked up three when it looked like he was going a bit. Hasan was solid with ball and in the field, Afridi took the first and last and Faheem delivered tight lines in his five-over burst for no reward. But overall, Pakistan will be delighted especially after losing the toss. The surface, though, is tricky, with some variable bounce and plenty of turn on offer. The light roller is currently being used, and it will be a perfect day for the hosts if they end the day with ten wickets in hand. For that, though, Abid and debutant Imran will need to see off Rabada and Nortje, which won't be easy.
