Martin Guptill 115 off 126: We wanted to get off to a good start, the way Finn complemented me was great. The wicket is flatter than in the last two games. We want to come in and restrict them, we are confident of defending the score but anything can happen in cricket.

Ireland had half-chances, a catch and a run out missed early on. The opening bowlers did not find assistance from the conditions like in the first two games. Josh Little took a couple of wickets but was expensive. Gareth Delany slowed the pace and troubled the batters and managed to Guptill but the pitch was too good for their length bowling to contain New Zealand.

2:20 pm: The fielders leave in fairly good spirit, the visitors' dressing room is pleased. On a cloudy afternoon, New Zealand have made merry. The opening partnership laid a strong foundation, the first couple of wickets fell quickly but Guptill managed to find support in Latham, then Nicholls. The high scoring rate ensured they were never under scoreboard pressure. Nicholls was excellent and carried on the flurry that Guptill started. Phillips, Bracewell, and Santner finished on a high to put the visitors on top.
