4.23pm: That will be tea, although I think many will need something stronger. It's a tantalising, Goldilocks target - not too high, not too low, and absurdly, given all the 2005 vibes around this series, slap bang in between what Australia needed and what they got on this ground in heroic fashion 18 years ago. There have only been two higher chases: Graeme Smith cudgeling Monty Panesar into submission in 2008, and the Yorkshire boys going loco against India last summer. There's also the threat of rain around tomorrow, not to mention the injury to Moeen Ali's spinning finger that could leave England looking to beg, steal and borrow overs from Joe Root and Harry Brook. What could be better, with four sessions left in this game? Karthik will be back for the next act in 10

And PV has flagged this: "Edgbaston 2005 - 407 runs on day 1. Aussies chase 282 England win by 2 Runs. Edgbaston 2023 - 407 runs on day 1...." What a naughty thought
"Jimmy's outhawking the Afternoonhawk!" squawks Hugh
END OF OVER:65 | 7 Runs | ENG: 271/9
- Stuart Broad9 (24b)
- James Anderson11 (11b)
- Scott Boland12-2-61-1
- Nathan Lyon23-2-78-4
First time Anderson has scored double-figures in more than two years, since Ahmedabad 2020-21
Looks like tea has been put back. These are the highest successful fourth-innings chases at Edgbaston, by the way. Only two beyond this current mark (one of them the acme of Bazball this time last year)
END OF OVER:64 | 1 Run | ENG: 264/9
- James Anderson6 (8b)
- Stuart Broad7 (21b)
- Nathan Lyon23-2-78-4

Deep third is in place for Anderson. Sensible
Tea is due in two minutes, although I guess it might actually be delayed, given England are nine down...

Here's Nick: "What a fantastic seesawing game of cricket, 270 is going to be a difficult chase 290/300 will be infinitely harder." Which in itself tells you how much of a mental game Test cricket it
