3.15pm Jake Ball will take the new ball. Guptill and Ronchi in the middle. Bring it on!

NepaliFan: "I was worried I'd be torn between watching the India-Nepal football friendly and the Champions Trophy... Rain gods to the rescue?" Well... can't get in the way of the big one, can we!

3.13pm Here come the umps. Don't fail me now!

Jon: "To be fair, June should be much better than this! It has been lovely here in the south for the last 2 or 3 weeks until a couple of days ago! Just unfortunate." It's not misfortune, it's a conspiracy! Come on, keep up ...

3.11pm Begone hover-cover, and never darken our wicket again! Or, at least, not until the close of play. We are really quite tremendously close to a resumption here ...

3.06pm "The New Zealand flag is threatening to come loose from its pole," adds Gnasher. "England's still firmly in place. An omen?" Oh, and it's a 3.15pm restart. I will believe that etc...

Conner: "Why does your hyperlink 'more dank news' direct me to a video called The Smiths - (Stop me if you think you've heard this before)?..." I can't imagine. Next.

Simon: "I'm not a meteorologist, but I am struggling to make sense of the decision to hold the CT in June, in the UK." Such are the reasons why the people are fed up with so-called experts.

3.03pm Gnasher has climbed into a slightly under-sized cardboard box, and is struggling to contain himself. "The sun peaks through, but I can't see a rainbow yet," he states. "Fourth umpire struggling to control his umbrella. Dramatic scenes." #scenes

2.59pm Scratch that ... here comes Gnasher with more dank news. "Raining. Players aborting their warm-ups. Groundstaff getting the main covers." Meh

2.53pm Okay, this looks promising. Some blue skies in the offing. Just the hover-cover on the middle of the pitch. Sit tight... we will restart at 3.05pm

Pavan Allada: "Now that Southee has taken 2 in 2, will he be on a hat-trick in their game against Bangladesh?" Nope. All that effort will count for nowt in the next game. Unlike the second innings of a Test, of course.

2.43pm Uh oh ... it's hosing down ... let's hope it's just another passing shower ...

2.30pm: Is that a good score? Hard to tell, but you can't argue too much with 310, particularly as they were struggling a little at 230 for 6 in the 41st over. Hales, Root, Stokes and Buttler all made useful contributions but the first three couldn't kick on and the Buttler ran out of partners. Not having to deliver the last three balls might help out Kane Williamson, too, though the innings still finished almost 30 minutes late. I think they'll still have a proper interval, so here's a gallery of the day's action while you wait - Miller will be back to kick off the chase in a bit.

Southee to Ball, OUT, out, superbly taken by Boult! Ball turned away and fended into the leg side, Boult sprinted to his right from square leg and leapt to snag it full length! So Southee finishes it with two in two, England are bolwed out, Buttler won't get back on strike... but it's still a handy total

JT Ball c Boult b Southee 0 (2m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

"All in double figures. I do like a bit of symmetry, don't you?" Is that symmetry or consistency, David Baker? Anyway, Wood has ruined it... In comes Jake Ball

49.2
W
Southee to Wood, OUT, gone first ball, sliced to cover! Wood was backing away and miscued a shortish ball off the splice, straight to the fielder and they had no chance of getting Buttler back on strike, either

MA Wood c Taylor b Southee 0 (3m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Mark Wood in at No. 10

49.1
1
Southee to Buttler, 1 run, back of a length, Buttler swats a pull back past the bowler for one

Final over, Tim Southee to bowl. Buttler on strike as they didn't bother running

END OF OVER:
49 | 15 Runs 1 Wkt | ENG: 309/8 | RR: 6.30

  • Jos Buttler60 (47b)
  • Adam Milne10-0-79-3
  • Trent Boult10-0-56-1

So, Milne finishes with 3 for 79. Expensive but he made important breakthroughs

48.6
W
Milne to Plunkett, OUT, this time Plunkett perishes trying to swing for the hills! Milne hits the middle of the pitch again, top-edged on the pull and although it swirls in the wind, mid-on clings on

LE Plunkett c Southee b Milne 15 (25m 10b 1x4 1x6) SR: 150.00

"Who was slower? Tharanga or KW?" I think Tharanga, Akshay Bansal, but NZ are going to come in at around 4hrs as well

48.5
1
Milne to Buttler, 1 run, Buttler backs away, Milne follows him, shovelled into the leg side
48.4
2
Milne to Buttler, 2 runs, backs away and pulls through square leg, again they get back for two
48.3
2
Milne to Buttler, 2 runs, more chin music but Buttler doesn't have a glass jaw and he smears a couple more in front of deep midwicket
