Thanks PDP. Here is Firdose Moonda's updated piece on Cricket South Africa's statements today and Quinton de Kock's absence.

3.45 pm West Indies end on 143, which is miles better than their pitiful display against England but still feels nowhere near a defendable total. Simmons' glacially slow innings will be a major talking point on the West Indies side. Meanwhile, the withdrawal of Quinton de Kock before the toss and CSA's subsequent statement has sparked plenty of feedback on the South Africa side. It's been an interesting day for very different reasons.

Evin Lewis on the mic: "I gave myself a bit of time in the Powerplay and it worked for me at the end of the day. I think it was a pretty slow pitch. It takes a couple balls to get in but once you do, you got to make the most of it. We were looking for 150-160 but we have to work hard to defend it."

South Africa favorites to chase. Alex Malcolm will be back for the first ball of the reply.

Pretorius to Bravo, 2 runs, back of a length on fifth stump, slaps this high over wide long-off, Miller bobbles this and compounds the error by throwing this relay way wide of Klaasen dragging him away from the stumps to allow an easy pair.

Pretorius to Bravo, no run, full and wide, goes for another heave but can't get this away.

Tareq: "The ball clearly dropped on the turf. As soon as it dropped on the turf and goes back in the fielder's hand, there was clear mud on the ball straight away. Very poor decision." At least I can feel better knowing I wasn't the only thinking my eyes were playing tricks on me.

Pretorius to Bravo, FOUR, full and wide, drives this inside out over extra cover and splits long-off and deep cover to the rope.

Pretorius to Walsh, OUT, slower ball on a good length at 112 kph on sixth stump, Walsh Jr slaps this high in the air over extra cover and the sweeper comes in off the rope 15 yards for an easy catch.

Hayden Walsh Jr enters. Pretorius comes around the stumps to the lefty.

Pretorius to Pollard, OUT, full on the stumps, slammed very straight and whistles past Aleem Dar who hits the deck before the ball goes straight to van der Dussen who was fielding at that ultra straight mid-off. They refer this for a possible catch, which Dar couldn't see because he was in self-preservation mode. Third umpire is called upon and it's clear the ball has short-hopped off the turf before going into Rassie's hands. Not out. And no run taken either. Hang on! They've given this out! Well well well, maybe I need to get my eyes checked but from my vantage point this hit the turf. Could be a talking point after play. Third umpire decides Rassie got his hands underneath the ball. I'm not convinced.

Pretorius to Bravo, 1 run, starts with a slower ball full and wide outside off at 107 kph, sliced high over backward point for a very long single. Pollard makes clear he wants the strike.

Pretorius to bowl the last over.

DJ Bravo enters on strike.

Nortje to Hetmyer, 1 run, OUT, full and wide, skies a drive over cover that falls just short of the fielder coming in from the rope, but Hetmyer is slow turning back for the second and the relay from David Miller to Klaasen is in plenty of time. Bails come off with Hetmyer a full yard short.

Nortje to Hetmyer, no run, missed runout! Full and wide yorker, stabbed out in front of point. Hetmyer is stranded halfway down the wicket and slips and falls trying to turn back. Bavuma delays his throw trying to wait for Klaasen to get to the stumps but the throw is errant in terms of a direct hit and is also unable to be collected cleanly by Klaasen.

Shimron Hetmyer enters at No. 7.

W
Nortje to Russell, OUT, pinpoint yorker on off stump at 148 kph! Pure heat from Nortje, too hot for Russell to handle. A heave for the leg side is defeated and the bails go flying.

Cricket South Africa has issued this statement on Quinton de Kock's decision to withdraw from today's game due to "personal reasons": "Cricket South Africa (CSA) has noted the personal decision by South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock not to "take the knee" ahead of Tuesday's game against the West Indies. All players had been required, in line with a directive of the CSA Board on Monday evening, to "take the knee" in a united and consistent stance against racism. This is also the global gesture against racism that has been adopted by sportspeople across sporting codes because they recognise the power of sport to bring people together. After considering all relevant issues, including the freedom of choice of players, the Board had made it clear it was imperative for the team to be seen taking a stand against racism, especially given SA's history. The Board's view was that while diversity can and should find expression in many facets of daily lives, this did not apply when it came to taking a stand against racism. The Board will await a further report from team management before deciding on the next steps. All players are expected to follow this directive for the remaining games of the World Cup. CSA thanks all other Proteas players for agreeing to unite and make such an important public stand against racism."

Pretorius to Pollard, FOUR, full on middle, Pollard smokes this flat and once again that very straight mid-on, almost behind the umpire now, misjudges the ball picking it up very late from behind the umpire and it swerves past him before going to the rope.

Pretorius to Russell, 1 run, slower ball again full and very wide, slaps this through the covers to the sweeper for one.

Pretorius to Russell, FOUR, overpitched on sixth stump, Russell smokes this flat down the ground. There was a man fielding extremely straight at mid-on, almost directly behind the non-striker, but even he can't stop this. It's hit that hard.

Dre Russ enters.

Pretorius to Gayle, OUT, first ball wicket for Pretorius! Slower ball bowled wide outside off stump on a fullish length, Gayle's timing is thrown off and tries to drag this into the leg side but slices a thick edge behind to Klaasen.

Pretorius comes on for his first over of the day. Around the stumps to Gayle.

  • Tabraiz Shamsi3-0-37-0

Chin: "Somewhere, Chris Tavare must be watching with a smile. He's no longer going to be the first one in future discussions when it comes to snail paced innings". True cricket aficionados know that in spite of Tavare's Test reputation, he was an attacking batter in limited overs cricket on the County scene. He is unfairly maligned for adjusting his game to suit the needs of a weak England lineup of the era.
