It was a good day for India as they have opened their medals tally at the CWG 2022. All four medals on Day 2 came from weightlifters.
It started with Sanket Mahadev Sargar winning a silver medal in men's 55kg category. He was a favourite to win the gold, but he injured his right elbow during the crucial lifts in clean and jerk. Still he did enough to bring home the silver.
Sanket's silver was followed by Gururaja Poojary's bronze in the men's 61kg category. Gururaja, a sliver medallist at the 2018 CWG at Gold Coast, lifted a total of 269kg (118kg+151kg) to finish in the third place.
Then Mirabai came to steal the show. The Olympic silver medallist won her second CWG gold by bossing the 49kg field. She aggregated 201kg (88kg + 113kg) to stamp her authority in the competition and achieve a Commonwealth Games record in the process.
Bindyarani Devi ended the day on a high by winning a silver in the women's 55kg. She lifted a total weight of 202kg (86kg+116kg) to finish second. With the 116kg clean and jerk lift, which was also her personal best, Bindyarani smashed the Games record and set a new national record.
