Samsung Galaxy wrestled away the top spot in the League of Legends Champions Korea with a dominant 2-0 sweep over SK Telecom T1 on Thursday to close out Day 3 of Week 6 in Seoul, South Korea.
While many chalked up Samsung's 2-0 sweep over SKT back in Week 1 as a fluke, given that SKT (9-2, 18-7 match record) was just coming back from the Mid-Season Invitational, Samsung (10-2, 21-8 match record) squashed that narrative in this series. SKT certainly didn't play like defending world champions in Game 1. While SKT managed to stall the game after its jungler, Kang "Blank" Sun-gu, stole a Baron as Rek'Sai at 21 minutes, Samsung had control over most of this game. This was especially true in the late game as Samsung, highlighted by mid laner Lee "Crown" Min-ho's Taliyah and AD carry Park "Ruler" Jae-hyuk's Varus, started to dominate SKT in teamfights. With Crown and Ruler pumping out almost 80,000 damage to champions throughout the course of the game, there was simply nothing SKT could do to prevent the 40-minute loss.
Anyone expecting SKT to come roaring back in Game 2 after such a rough defeat was sorely mistaken. Samsung ran it back with the same team composition from the first game and once again outplayed SKT. SKT looked a bit more in control during the first couple minutes of the game, but it didn't take long for Samsung to fight back to run SKT out of the studio. Samsung once again took teamfights with ease while putting a special focus on punishing overextensions and misplays from SKT top laner Seung "Huni" Hoon Heo's Fiora, who finished with a game-high five deaths in the 25-minute game. Samsung was so far ahead in this game that it had managed to amass a 10,000-gold lead by just 22 minutes before even securing the Baron. Once that Baron was picked up, the end result was but a formality as Samsung stormed into the SKT base to finish up the shocking 2-0 sweep.
SKT will hope to bounce right back from this loss with a matchup against the Afreeca Freecs on Saturday at 7 a.m. ET, while Samsung looks to continue its momentum against bbq Olivers next Thursday at 7 a.m. ET.
