Phoenix1 pulled off a huge upset against second-place Counter Logic Gaming with a reverse sweep on Sunday to begin Week 8, Day 3 of the North American League of Legends Championship Series in Los Angeles.
Despite still being on the hunt for late season wins, Phoenix1(4-12, 15-27 match record) decided to try out some roster changes against one of the top teams in the league. The experiment didn't work out very well in Game 1 as Counter Logic Gaming (11-5, 25-16 match record) dictated the tempo from the beginning to end.
After getting leads in all lanes, CLG expertly rotated around the Rift to pick up up objectives and take away resources from Phoenix1. After scoring its second ace of Game 1, Counter Logic Gaming took a 1-0 series lead.
In Game 2, Phoenix1 brought back top laner Derek "zig" Shao and mid laner Yoo "Ryu" Sang-ook in attempt to salvage the series. CLG jumped out to a minor gold lead, but P1 AD carry Noh "Arrow" Dong-hyeon's Kalista got in position to draw first blood and turn the tides with that early advantage.
CLG tried to engage but was usually countered by Arrow throwing Fate's Call into the tightly-grouped CLG battle formation, and the rest of Phoenix1 picked CLG apart from there. Phoenix1 didn't take its foot off the gas, nor did Arrow, who finished with a 7/0/6 KDA (kills/deaths/assists) in a 27-minute victory.
Counter Logic Gaming found itself in a small gold deficit in Game 3 and played passively as Phoenix1 slowly built up its lead in objectives and gold. When CLG did try to fight back, Arrow's Kalista answered once again with a Fate's Call and turned around CLG's engage into a Phoenix1 victory.
Arrow found his Spring Split MVP form as his 9/1/3 KDA performance on Kalista carried P1 in the mid-game teamfights, and a 3-0 teamfight win gave P1 enough time to push and finish the series.
Counter Logic Gaming hopes to bounce back against Team Dignitas at 9 p.m. ET on Friday, while Phoenix1's attempt to climb out of the relegation zone pits it against Team SoloMid at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
