The Unicorns of Love made sure the 2017 Summer Split of the European League of Legends Championship Series ended with a bang when it managed to reverse sweep H2K Gaming at the end of Week 10, Day 4 in Berlin
.
While there was no playoff seeding at stake, the rivalry between the Unicorns of Love (8-4, 19-13 match record) and H2K (9-3, 20-6) has been so great over the course of 2017 that neither team was willing to back down, even while the teams around them played games that were obviously meant to amuse fans, not demonstrate the height of competitive play.
While the series as a whole was entertaining, Game 1 was certainly not as the Unicorns of Love opted into a strategy that was heavy on tanks and light on damage. H2K reacted to the draft appropriately and completely shut down UoL AD carry Samuel "Samux" Fernandez Fort's Kalista early on in the match. UoL was utterly outmatched in teamfights without its main damage source, giving H2K a relatively easy win.
Game 2 was a far more interesting affair, however, as the Unicorns had a very different composition, one that allowed mid laner Fabian "Exileh" Schubert to shine on his Vladimir. Nobody on H2K could survive Exileh's sustained damage output, and the team lacked the damage to take him out before Exileh recovered ridiculous amounts of health. The Unicorns' composition in Game 2 simply had too many threats for H2K to deal with in teamfights, and it crumbled before long.
In Game 3, Unicorns got its chance to shine, as both top laner Tamas "Vizicsacsi" Kiss and support Zdravets "Hylissang" Iliev Galabov got their hands on some of their strongest picks in Shen and Rakan, respectively. By the 20-minute mark the Unicorns had already nearly managed to earn a 10,000-gold lead, and the team ended the game with nearly twice that. In the end, the Unicorns proved once again that when the Rift descends into chaos, they're likely to come out on top.
The Player of the Series was Vizicsacsi, as he was one of the principal threats of the team in all three games despite playing tanks throughout the series. In his expert hands, one could almost be forgiven for thinking that champions like Cho'Gath or Shen were themselves carries, as he won several one-on-one fights and created immense side lane pressure. Of special note, his Shen in Game 3 was such a problem for H2K that it had to collapse on him with nearly the entire team throughout the game, and each time he nearly managed to earn himself a kill on the way out. While Vizicsacsi might not be this split's MVP like he was in Spring, there's still no denying that he remains a preeminent threat in the top lane.
As the Summer Split regular season draws to a close, Unicorns of Love head into playoffs to take on Misfits next weekend, while H2K enjoy a first round bye and will not not take to the Rift again for quite some time.
