Rory McIlroy files for divorce from wife of 7 years

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy on Monday filed for divorce from his wife, Erica, according to court documents in family court in Palm Beach County, Florida.

McIlroy, 35, who is playing in this week's PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club, confirmed the pending separation through his manager, Sean O'Flaherty.

"Rory McIlroy's communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed," O'Flaherty said in the statement. "They stressed Rory's desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment."

McIlroy and his wife have a 3-year-old daughter, Poppy.

McIlroy met his wife, the former Erica Stoll, at the 2012 Ryder Cup. They started dating two years later, after McIlroy ended his relationship with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

McIlroy and Stoll were married in Ireland in 2017.

In the court filing, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, McIlroy's attorneys wrote that the marriage is irretrievably broken. They asked for shared parental custody of their daughter and for a judge to enforce a prenuptial agreement the couple signed on March 7, 2017.

A reason for the divorce wasn't immediately known. The petition for dissolution of marriage was filed confidentially.

McIlroy's attorney, Thomas J. Sasser, also represented Tiger Woods in his divorce from his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, in 2010.
