Eighteen minutes, seven touchdowns and two state records.
Arundel's Billy Cosh is only in his second year as a starting quarterback, but the senior has made such an impact on the Maryland state record book he is a serious candidate for Offensive Player of the Year, but for now he will have to settle for MDVarsity.com State Player of the Week.
Cosh only played 18 minutes against Glen Burnie, but the threw for 267 yards and seven TDs in the 75-19 win. Cosh now has 85 career touchdowns, breaking the previous public school record of 80, which was held by Joe Haden (Friendly) and Deontay Twymann (Sherwood).
"I just looked at it [the record] as something I could do," Cosh said of breaking the public school record. "My teammates did a good job -- my offensive line blocked and my receivers caught the ball well. The most impressive thing this year is we are playing really good team ball. Our offense and defense is playing well. That's the reason why this happens."
In addition to the career record, Cosh tied the record for most touchdown passes in a game. Cosh ties former St. John's-Prospect Hall (Keith Ricca) and Kennedy (Melvin Harris) with seven touchdowns in a game. Cosh threw for six touchdowns in a game last year against Southern-AA.
As for the Glen Burnie game, Cosh said the team had one of its best weeks of practice leading up to the game and they were able to execute the plays the coaches called.
"We found the holes in the defense -- we exploited them as best we could," Cosh said. "We went deep a lot because [Glen Burnie] was playing press-man. That just equals a lot of vertical action for us."
Cosh has thrown for 1,639 yards and 28 touchdowns this season and his name climbs in the record book every week. Cosh already holds the season records for total offense (4,074), passing yards (3,913), attempted passes (448), passes completed (292) and touchdowns (56) in addition to game records of passing yards (471), passes attempted (64) and completed passes (39).
With four games left in the regular season, Cosh is only 810 yards away from the public school record for most career yards (6,522) held by former North County QB Mike Pfisterer.
"When all is said and done I might sit down an do that [reflect on the records] but right now I just want to try and get better and better," Cosh said. "I play in a great offense, I'm lucky to play in that. We have great coaches and great players. I'm really appreciative of the guys around me."
Cosh also has a chance at breaking the record for most career touchdown passes. Arundel would likely need to make a deep run in the playoffs, but Cosh is 28 TD passes away from Ricca's record of 113. Cosh threw for 56 touchdowns in 13 games last year. If he throws for that again he will tie Ricca's record, since he had one TD pass as a sophomore.
