Creighton's Greg McDermott gets extension, pay raise

Creighton men's basketball coach Greg McDermott has agreed to a contract extension, the school announced Friday.

The new deal runs through the 2027-28 season and will make McDermott one of the highest-paid coaches in the Big East, sources told ESPN.

"There is no place I would rather be for the rest of my career than Creighton," McDermott said in a statement.

McDermott has led Creighton since 2010, guiding the Bluejays to eight NCAA tournament appearances. They have won at least one game in each of the past three tournaments, including last season's run to the Elite Eight, where they lost to San Diego State.

Creighton is on track for a potential 2- or 3-seed in this month's NCAA tournament, with the Bluejays sitting at 22-8 overall and 13-6 in the Big East entering Saturday's regular-season finale at Villanova. They had one of the season's most impressive victories in late February, when they knocked off then-No. 1 UConn 85-66.

Prior to taking over at Creighton, McDermott was the head coach at Iowa State and Northern Iowa, where he went to three NCAA tournaments. McDermott's son Doug was a three-time All-American during his time at Creighton and the national player of the year in 2014.

McDermott's new contract takes him out of the mix for any openings this spring. He had recently been linked to the vacancy at Ohio State.
