Syracuse to hire Mount St. Mary's coach Dan Engelstad as assistant

Syracuse is set to hire Mount St. Mary's head coach Dan Engelstad as the school's new assistant men's basketball coach. He was head coach at Mount St. Mary's for six seasons, including an NCAA tournament appearance in 2021.

He'll replace Gerry McNamara, who left the Syracuse staff to become the head coach at Siena. Engelstad brings a breadth of head coaching experience to coach Adrian Autry's staff as Autry enters his second season.

Engelstad has 11 seasons of head coaching experience. That includes the NEC conference tournament championship in 2021, when The Mount upset Bryant on the road in the league title game.

Engelstad transitioned The Mount from the NEC to the MAAC in the 2022-23 season, going 13-20 and 13-19 in the two seasons after upgrading leagues.

Engelstad went 104-34 record during five seasons at Division III Southern Vermont, bringing that program to unprecedented heights. He won New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year three times.

He has experience in the Northeast as a Division I assistant at Holy Cross (2010-13), where he worked for Milan Brown. While there, he recruited and developed Malcolm Miller, who went on to play in the NBA.

Engelstad is a Bethesda, Md., native with strong recruiting ties in the DMV.
