Sources: Anthony Pettis will fight Stephen Thompson in UFC welterweight debut

Anthony Pettis is headed to welterweight.

Pettis has agreed to move up to 170 pounds to meet Stephen Thompson at the March 23 UFC Fight Night event, multiple sources told ESPN. While not yet officially announced, the event is expected to take place in Nashville, Tennessee.

According to sources, the main event fight isn't signed just yet but is expected to be finalized in the coming days.

The bout will mark Pettis' UFC welterweight debut. A former WEC and UFC lightweight champion, Pettis will be competing in his third different weight class in the UFC. He once fought as a welterweight in 2008 prior to signing with the UFC. Pettis (21-8) is coming off a TKO loss to Tony Ferguson in October.

Thompson (14-3-1) hasn't fought since his unanimous decision loss to Darren Till in May. He was sidelined after the fight due to a knee injury he suffered in the loss.
