GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Sam Barrington, one of the Green Bay Packers' two starting inside linebackers, was placed on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday due to a foot injury, the team announced.
Barrington left Sunday's win over the Chicago Bears in the first quarter. The Packers allowed 189 yards rushing in the game, the second-highest total of any team in Week 1.
In Week 2, the Packers host the Seattle Seahawks, the NFL's best rushing offense from last season. The Seahawks averaged 172.6 yards per game on the ground in 2014 and rushed for 194 yards against the Packers in the NFC Championship Game last season, including 157 from Marshawn Lynch.
It was even worse in the teams' Week 1 game last year. The Packers gave up 207 yards rushing, with Lynch accounting for 110.
Nate Palmer replaced Barrington against the Bears. Rookie fourth-round pick Jake Ryan also could see time with Barrington out.
Barrington became a starter midway through last season in a move that coincided with Clay Matthews' move to inside linebacker. He helped a run defense that was ranked last in the league midway through last season finish 23rd in rushing yards allowed.
Also Tuesday, the Packers activated defensive end Datone Jones from exempt status.
