Packers place CB Sam Shields on injured reserve

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields intends to come back from his latest concussion, but it will be at least another two months as he was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.

The Packers made the move Tuesday, more than five weeks after Shields sustained a concussion in the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. If the Packers use the designated-to-return tag on him -- and they don't have to declare that at this point -- he could begin practicing again in six weeks and then play two weeks later.

Shields said on his Instagram account that he plans to play again this season. At the earliest, he could play in Week 14 against the Seattle Seahawks.

"The plan for Sam is to get him healthy, number one," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday. "It's going to be longer than we might have expected, so it's just going off the last conversation I've had with Sam. It's just important to go one day at a time and make sure we get him healthy."

The Packers used Shields' roster spot to acquire running back Knile Davis in a trade from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Shields had been making progress through the concussion protocol, McCarthy said recently. It's unclear if he had a setback.

Shields' latest concussion was the fourth of his NFL career, which began in 2010, and his second in less than nine months. He missed four games late last season with a concussion but returned for the playoff loss at Arizona. Dating back to last season's concussion, he has played in only two of the Packers' last 10 games.
