Chiefs expect QB Alex Smith to play next week against Panthers

Even though Kansas City ruled out quarterback Alex Smith for Sunday's game in the middle of last week, he is expected to be back behind center and starting next Sunday at Carolina, a team official told ESPN.

Smith still is resting and recovering from the head blows he suffered last Sunday against the Colts.

Even a week later, the Chiefs say Smith never suffered a concussion, but he did get stitches in one of his ears.

Smith spent part of last week in return-to-play protocol, but he is expected to be ready to go against the Panthers.

Nick Foles, who was 16-of-22 for 223 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Smith last week, will start Sunday at quarterback against Jacksonville.
