Lucas Niang, Chiefs' third-round draft pick, opts out of 2020 season

The Kansas City Chiefs lost one member of their 2020 draft class after third-round draft pick Lucas Niang told the team he would opt out of the 2020 season.

Niang, from Texas Christian, is an offensive lineman. He figured in the playing picture at guard as a rookie but eventually could be moved to tackle. The Chiefs have several candidates to start at guard, including veteran free-agent additions Kelechi Osemele and Mike Remmers and Andrew Wylie, a part-time starter last season.

Niang seemed eager to get the season going during a July 25 interview after Chiefs rookies had started training camp.

"I'm super excited,'' he said. "It's nice to see how they're doing everything safety-wise, keeping us safe and making us feel comfortable, but I'm really excited to get on the field."

The Chiefs previously had two starters, guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and running back Damien Williams, opt out of the season.
