Hurting Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield still plans to face Steelers

BEREA, Ohio -- Baker Mayfield was limited in Wednesday's practice with a chest injury, but the Cleveland Browns quarterback said he is "still confident" he'll play this weekend against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mayfield suffered the injury in Sunday's win over the Indianapolis Colts after taking a big hit on an interception. After a brief visit inside the medical tent, he finished the game. X-rays afterward came back negative on his ribs, but Mayfield said that he remains sore.

"Yeah, kind of the whole right side -- everything is intertwined right there," he said before Wednesday's practice. "I'm lucky with the way that I landed that it was not directly on my shoulder -- kind of rolled a little bit. Obviously, could have been a lot worse."

Mayfield's backup, Case Keenum, whom the Browns signed in the offseason, got the majority of the work in Mayfield's place Wednesday.

Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski said the team would continue to evaluate Mayfield throughout the week, but he said his quarterback wouldn't need a significant amount of practice time to be ready for the Steelers on Sunday.

"You get ready for Thursday night games with a very limited amount of full-speed team reps," Stefanski said.

"I think we will take it each day at a time here. ... He is sore today so we will work through it today and then see where he is tomorrow."

The Browns (4-1) are off to their best start in 26 years, though they are looking for their first victory over the Steelers (4-0) in Pittsburgh since 2003.

"We are not worried about the past," Mayfield said. "We're worried about the right now."
