Source: Saints to sign QB Nathan Peterman as new backup

NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Saints are planning to sign quarterback Nathan Peterman to a one-year deal, a source told ESPN.

Peterman, 29, will compete for a backup role behind quarterback Derek Carr following the departure of Jameis Winston. The Saints also have 2023 fourth-round pick Jake Haener on the roster.

Peterman, who began his career with the Buffalo Bills in 2017, was most recently a backup for the Chicago Bears, where he worked with new Saints quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko. Peterman also has ties to Carr, having spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders as one of Carr's backups.

Peterman has played in 15 total games with five starts. He has completed 53.1% of his passes for 712 yards, 4 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

His most recent start occurred with the Bears in the 2022 season. He completed 11 of 19 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown in that game, a 29-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Jan. 8, 2023.
