CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Wide receiver Quentin Johnston gave the Chargers the first score Sunday, beating Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn in for a 29-yard touchdown pass on a throw from Justin Herbert. Johnston adjusted while the pass was in the air enough to keep the ball away from the outstretched arms of Horn.

It was Johnston's third career TD and first on a ball thrown 20 or more yards.

Johnston, the Chargers first-round pick last season, struggled in his first year, finishing with a 6% drop rate, which was the highest of any rookie with at least 50 targets. His four drops tied for the fourth highest among rookies.

Johnston scored again in the second quarter, catching a five-yard pass from Herbert. Johnston was left wide open in the back of the end zone in what looked like a busted coverage by the Carolina defense. He has three receptions for 37 yards on the day.
