Smith-Schuster's catch, on third-and-7, went for 13 yards and a touchdown to give the Chiefs a 22-14 lead.
Harrison Butker's point-after try hit an upright and was no good, leaving the Falcons within one score.
Smith-Schuster led the Chiefs' wide receivers in receptions in 2022 but left after that season for the New England Patriots as a free agent. He returned to the Chiefs this year after being released by the Patriots in training camp.
